“Decent affordable housing in Kolkata”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 9, 2013

While we had some initial reservations after arriving here, we ended up having a really wonderful 4-night stay at Sunflower. The staff is very friendly and extremely helpful. Anytime we asked for anything (i.e. toilet paper, blankets, etc.), it was always immediately delivered. The Guest House is also a very easy walk to the popular and busy Park Street which has tons of great places to eat and shop. It is also a 20-minute walk to Mother House, if you plan on volunteering during your time here in Kolkata. Sunflower also was kind enough to arrange a prepaid taxi to bring us to the airport in the very early morning. It's important to note that they lock the gates at night and are typically not unlocked until after 9am but they are happy to open them...after you wake them up. We would definitely recommend this place if you want somewhere that is cheap, just don't expect chandeliers and plush beds.

Three of us booked two rooms to stay in this guest house in Kolkata. We were one couple (Bangladeshi girl and Indian guy) and one Irish girl. When we arrived we were told that we could only stay if the two girls stayed together and the boy stayed on his own.
They told us that if it was two foreigners in a couple then that would have been fine, or two Indian's in a couple that would have been fine, but because it was a mixed nationality couple with one Indian and one foreigner they couldn't stay together.
We arrived very late at night so decided to stay the night, before moving to a new hotel in the morning, but this is a ridiculous rule. It was lucky the three of us were there so we could rearrange ourselves. We thought of ignoring the rules and changing rooms but they have locks on the corridors and what seems like unnecessary security/rule checking! It's such a shame because the location and the rooms themselves are nice for the price.
Sadly, even trying to discuss the situation, the staff were very rude to us, and were making rude comments in Bengali about the other guests who didn't speak Bengali.
I hope the hotel will make it's rules clear on their website and consider changing to rules which are the same for all nationalities and not discriminatory.

Dear Guest,
Thanks for the review and feedback.
The Police in India create harrasment for non related Indians of opposite gender if they stay in the same room. However they are relaxed about non Indian customers. So we are careful when unrelated Indian guests of opposite gender want to take the same room (even if one person is Indian).
Please do not hold this against our hotel.
Hope you come and stay with us and go back with positive feedback.
Thanks and regards

I couldn't have asked for a better location for a first visit to Kolkata. The Sunflower is down a quiet side street just off Park Street, an upmarket shopping area with classy but affordable restaurants etc. Very handy for Park Street metro station, too, or you can pick up a tram (a memorable experience in itself) and rattle down to Esplanade. I'm so glad I was here rather than in slightly seedy Sudder Street, just a few blocks away. The Sunflower is a real period time-warp, which is fun in itself; the entrance looks rather grubby, but the rooms are fine with a powerful shower and masses of hot water. There's a laundry man in a nearby street who does a superb job costing very little.

The booking procedure was very easy, direct with the guesthouse, and I checked out different classes of room on arrival. The bigger ones were certainly a lot smarter, but as I was on my own I opted for a smaller room at the back which was basic but adequate and totally quiet at night. The staff were efficient but not terribly friendly (apart from the lovely lift man who was always a joy to see), perhaps through lack of English (but management speak good English). A basic breakfast (eggs, toast, banana) is available, and I enjoyed taking this on the roof terrace. Enjoy your stay - I did!

Room Tip: Check out the options on arrival - I was shown a twin bed room that was really bright and cheerful...

Cheap place to stay in a great location but you get what you pay for. Rooms were fairly basic but functional but I did have to ask for bed sheets and got what looked like a double sheet torn in half in return, we found a few cigarette butts in the bathroom and never managed to get any hot water. Breakfasts are served at 8 and that was too late for us but we found that the breakfasts across the road in the swanky looking hotel are served from 7 and only cost 120 rupees for an all you can eat buffet. Roof terrace and the dilapidated old lift were my favourite bits at this place.

I have stayed in Kolkata several times in various hotels/guest house but never come across such a guest house where the facilities are very good right from the food to the staff. They are very curtious and welcoming. I room are spotlessly clean and i would recommend tourist or any one visiting kolkata to make it a must to stay in this guest house. Its only a short distance from the Railway station(about 20mins) and a 1 hour drive from the airport. When compared to other hotels/guest house which are not equivalent to this guest house in any respect, the price for a night in this guest house is very reasonable @15 pounds a night.

Stumbled upon this place while planning my trip to kolkata few days back; saw good ratings, comforting reviews, so booked it...

And Wow! it was a great decision!!

Great, central location; Excellent Value for Money; Clean and Healthy atmosphere; excellent condition of all amenities (water, geyser, TV, etc.) pool of cordial service boys.

As an absolute bonus- a 19th century Building with an antique elevator in smooth operating condition!! Adds greatly to that “Oh! Calcutta” feel. And of course, the roof garden…

What more could you expect for $25 per night for an AC Double bed room?!

I have stayed at the Sunflower three times and it has always been friendly, clean and reliable. It is good value for money and is in a great location (close to Sudder, Park Street, Sister house, etc.). The roof garden is an interesting surprise, with views over the city.
