“Great hotel to relax”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 20, 2010

We went here to take time out and just unwind. It was a good experience here. The hotel has good facilities, including fitness room. The food is quite good with lot of variety. Being located centrally in the city, it also helped us to get around to Park Street to enjoy the place.

This hotel is in a beautiful old building close to Park Street, off Shakespeare Sarani in the nice part of the city. Its a good hotel with nice rooms (although the AC controls didnt seem fine-tunable) albeit a bit expensive (at least I thought so). The fitness center (part of the spa) is nice and big with cardio machines and weight machines, but lacks serious dumbbells (stops at 15 LBs!).

Breakfast is pretty good with a decent variety, but not all items are as tasty as they could be, and a colleague who has stayed there before commented that it seemed scaled back from his experience a couple of years ago.

Takes about an hour from the airport and while they do arrange for transportation, it seems rather expensive - charge Rs. 1460 for one-way ina Fiat Linea.

Overall a decent hotel, but may be worth looking around for a better deal closeby.

Well I understand that not all restaurants can be Michelin Starred, what’s the point of the award otherwise; but I do believe that all restaurants, especially the ones attached to 5 star hotels, that charge audacious prices should afford all customers three basic things (a) reasonably good food (b) fuss free ‘smiling’ service (c) an open ear and entrepreneurial attitude to solving problems (if things do go wrong which they do with incredible frequency). The Marble Room at the New Kenilworth, Kolkata sadly misses all three by a zillion miles.

First, the food. We ordered Indian food and therefore quite ordinarily expected humble onions & lemons served gratis. Fantastically, at the Marble Room they adopt a ridiculous commercial approach and list this euphemistically as ‘onion salad’ and actually make it a menu item. Even dhabas where people eat at fraction of these prices are less commercial. There is a serious disconnect between the restaurant’s ‘five-star aspiration’ and ‘noodle bar take-away mentality’ (where they charge you extra for chilli sauce). It’s a disgusting way to earn an extra buck and what will they invent next, ‘that will be One Hundred & Fifty Rupees for the pickles sir’? Deplorable! I am not expending valuable commentary on the food which was sub average and not reflective of the recently inflated prices of the dishes on the menu.

Second, the service. The Calcutta grapevine says that Kenilworth and especially their Marble Room is notorious for following a ‘caste system’, well we witnessed it first-hand and I guess we really weren’t out there at the top of their caste hierarchy. At some tables, frequented my more regular guests (we knew because steward were being hailed by their names), the service was par excellence; you could see the expedited service. At our table however, we had to suffer a thirsty fifteen minutes wait just for the water to be served. The hors d'oeuvre were served piecemeal (spread over a good 20 minutes) by waiters who don’t smile or acknowledge you. You could have had been served by Frankenstein and you wouldn’t notice the difference.

Third, is the attitude of the restaurant at accepting feedback and making an effort to make the rest of the meal enjoyable. We requested, rather humbly at first to see the Restaurant Manager, but he didn’t come by. Half an hour passes. We request again, this time un-courteously and irritatedly viola the Manager appears instantly with the ubiquitous Marble Room ‘stiff upper lip’oblivious to any feedback we had to give. Our feedbacks were abruptly cut short by, “I got it the first time …. sir”. Now that’s a first!

The experience was such a huge screw up that I have taken this as a personal crusade to deter as many guests from dining at this shame of a restaurant.

The hotel is still living in the nineties which had its own advantages and disadvantages...
It still has a very awkward setting of the front desk with a "Cashier" window similar to what we will see in most nationalized banks (Even they have done away with it mostly)
The amenities in the room are of the 90ies...
Apart from the infrastructure, the employees were warm and friendly and very very caring...
Overall - not a bad place to be as the rooms were nice and cheap compared to other hotels.
Location is nice as everything is close by like Vardaan Market, Park Street, A.C. Market Forum etc.. one can roam around easily as its also safe at night

I've stayed here a couple of times when in Kolkata and I will go back next time I'm there. For me it's a bit of an oasis out of the hustle and bustle of the city. Ok, maybe there are better hotels but I like staying here. The rooms in the new block are modern, well maintained and clean and nicely decorated. The breakfast room is modern and spacious with a really good selection of hot and cold choices. There is a chef on hand to cook your eggs and dosa to order. Most of the time the staff have been friendly and helpful. Room service is good, I've ordered food several times and it's been very good, same goes for the laundry and ironing. It is expensive by Indian standards but for Western travellers visiting Kolkata I would recommend it.
