“Good Bengali food in a nice place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 5, 2013

Love the Bengali food here (take a Thala - you will get a little of everything in small cups - good to try) - even if it is a little bit oily. it can be a little spicy but it is ok. The restaurant is very well situated (behind forum mall) in a well maintained old house. Only minus point is they do not serve wine or beer.

“excellent Bengali food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 22, 2013

Kewpie's has earned a name in Calcutta for good reasons. I have been there twice and would go again anytime. The thalis - actually a full meny focussing on fish, meat or vegetables - are all excellent choice and you are getting rare specialities which you are not likely to find in many other places. The location just behind Netaji Bhavan is nice and quiet as is the restaurant itself. Don't expect to get your food after five minutes, this is a place to enjoy a longer evening.

“Excellent Atmosphere & Food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 31, 2013

When i visited Kolkata, i definitely wanted to try out authentic Bengali food. When my friends recommended Kewpie's i thought it will be an old, unhygienic restaurant with hoards of people. Anyways, since i had to sample the local cuisine we did land up at Kewpie's. The restaurant is on the ground floor of a residential house and were welcomed by a dog owned by the restaurant owner.

The restaurant looks like a small boutique restaurant in a very makeshift atmosphere. The place is clean and the food is simply delicious. I was told that the food was very typical to a Bengali house and not the regular restaurant type food.

The menu is extensive but everything on it might not be available. There are different types of thalis which include vegetarian food as well as choice of chicken/mutton & fish.

The portions are not very large and one thali can only be enough for one.

I would highly recommend this place to anyone who wants a good home cooked bengali meal.

However, considering it is not a fine dine restaurant, it is expensive at around Rs.800-Rs.1000 per head.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 25, 2013

not so clean. i was using a toilet and had a peek into the kitchen. ghastly filthy. again i am from malaysia so nothing i haven't seen. oh well.

then the food is like amazing. yes, a bit miserly but hey it's like 1/3 of the price of the thalis in aheli.

“Please don't go”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed January 25, 2013

I had gone with very high expectations because of all the buzz surrounding this restaurant but would never go again. There is nothing good about this restaurant except for the decor and the mythical reputation which it has. Food was cold and terrible probably served stale because it tasted bad and unpalatable. The staff think that they have the right to be rude to guests and boss around and the service was horrible. The staff spoke loudly and scolded me for asking about ingredients of a dish obviously untrained about guest allergy possibilities and banged my plate and glass in front of me. I would never go again and have told all my friends to stay away too.
