“Great old school hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 10, 2013

This is one of the great old school hotels with a cranky lift which I like so much. The staff was great and we enjoyed the big rooms and the room service a lot. At night it seems the Hotel bar is a popular hang out place for locals, well worth a visit. The location is just 20 minutes walk from the ferries or 1 minute to the subway. So you don’t need a taxi if you come from the railway station.

Kolkatta was my favorite big city in India and I would stay at the Broadway Hotel again.

We stayed in Broadway hotel at Kolkata on 5th of November, 2013 in its Suit room. Hotel outer look is not so heart touching but its room, amenities and staff behaviour was heart-warming.

Things to love about Broadway hotel:
1) Spacious and large rooms
2) Loving staff behaviour
3) Cooperative management
4) Rooms are non ac but actually no-need of ac due to its structure
5) Economic-your pocket love it
6) Location-situated in main market

Things to dislike the hotel
1) Too noisy due to its location
2) Too much traditional
3) No wifi

Over all I personally liked it.

Hotel Broadway is a home-like accommodation located in Kolkata’s bustling central business district of Chandni Chowk. It offers affordable, clean and hygienic lodging on a 24-hour check out basis, a luxury that most of the budget segment tourists in India yearn for, and are deprived of.

The high ceiling hotel rooms prima facie look like abandoned circuit house sections but they are spacious, airy and enviably functional (switches, plug points, water taps and flushes…all are in perfect working condition and yes, you really don’t miss the AC.) The large, dim-lit restaurant and dining area on the ground floor is an ideal hangout to indulge in some soulful banter over booze and bread. If you can overlook the soot-crusted window screens, you’ll find this place comfortable and cozy.

The restaurant and bar stinks in the morning. The walls need a brighter coat of paint and the hotel premises could do with some basic cleaning job. The owner consciously wears a patronizing, stoic expression on his face (occasionally accompanied by a half smile) which seems to advice guests to maintain safe distance. A clever ploy to steer clear of staple complaints that he’s sure of even before the guest is aware of. Most of the waiters are cynical and largely motionless. And there are certain secrets they don’t tell you upfront about the best and worst rooms on each floor. If you are persistent, you are rewarded with some sound advice.

This hotel is still the first choice for a number of tourists (foreigners included) who care for proximity more than ambiance. The hotel website proudly proclaims: “Kolkata is more than just a City. She's a thought process. She's a lifestyle. Come check her out”. Well, if the management is serious about its open invitation, it should refrain from overselling its functional status and attend to some pressing housekeeping issues.

Room Tip: Avoid the topmost floors during May. You will boil within minutes. Don't ask waiters for taxi bo...

I really liked the Broadway Hotel. Kolkata was the last stop in a two month India adventure. Lucky we found this place because it 1) fit out budget 2) very walkable to markets and restaurants 3) made for a charming Kolkata experience. The room was very spacious. The bed was comfortable enough. Had a gin and tonic in the restaurant and felt like I was transported back in time.

First of all BH is an experience. It's a 1940s/50s era hotel where little has changed. Expect dated rooms with retro charm. They are peeling and somewhat dirty but enjoyable and an excellent value.

The hotel is very masculine. It doesn't seem too welcoming if you're a woman.

The staff is much the same as back in the day. Bell boy, floor attendant. All of whom expect tips and barge in your room and won't leave until they get something without really providing a service. 10 rupees to end the awkwardness.

The restaurant is good Bengali food. Good bar. Classic feel. Not for women. It's not threatening, just very masculine.

We stayed three nights at this hotel before moving to The Kenilworth for a more up-market experience. Our large corner room had many windows, without a view, a ceiling fan, a cold shower, good enough in this climate, and cable television. No breakfast, no WiFi, but it would be hard to beat for the price, a fraction of what we paid at the Kenilworth.

The location was great, with a metro station just around the corner, good restaurants like Anand nearby and wonderful street food just down the road. It would be hard to find a better budget hotel at such a low price. It's not surprising that TripAdvisor rates it as Number 1 for value.

Room Tip: High level corner rooms are probably quieter than those in the front, but you can't avoid some t...

We loved the Broadway Hotel. Yes, it isn't shiny and new but it has a certain charm. Our corner room was huge with high ceilings and numerous windows. It can be noisy at night. Each floor is assigned several staff who were all very friendly and attentive. The elevator attendant was parrticularly friendly. The hotel had laundry services, which we used and can recommend. Breakfast was not included, but there is a small restaurant on-site, more of a dark gentleman's smoking lounge. While the atmosphere was certainly interesting, the food served was okay. Instead, walk to Anand for dosas-only a 5min walk. All in all, we would return.
