“Eccentric”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2012

They make no secret of the strangeness of Broadway - it has, for example, no A/C and no hotwater. Then, you discover, you actually do not need it. Our room was quiet - for inner city Kolkata - and it was clean. The staff were friendly and were helpful. Room service was pretty good as well. The restaurant is not the greatest, but it is cool and interesting. Just across the road is the Chandinichowk Metro - just R40 and two stops to Park Street and some of the finest restaurants going. Felt very much part of Kolkata by staying in the Broadway, and would stay again; but I suspect their prime location will put them under pressure to upgrade... and that will be a little sad. I will stay again in its current state.

Room Tip: Go higher and out the back

Sure this hotel has loads of retro character, unfortunately however the staff that works the front desk are quite rude, do not know how to say please or thank you, refuse to book reservations for guests. Furthermore, I stayed at this hotel for over a week but was having a difficult time sleeping in the morning due to noise by the launderers on the roof above me. Instead of simply apologizing and/or trying to somehow accomodate me, the manager instead claimed that another person from my same country stayed in that exact room for 1 month prior and never complained about such noise at all (Translation: "What's wrong with YOU??"). Statled by the lack of professionalism in his reply, I attempted to mention the obvious that all guests needs are not identical (whether or not they reside from the same country) and that sleeping patterns between individuals vary widely. Despite this, he continued to try to press forward his absurd, illogical point, i.e. that the noise itself wasn't a legitimate issue of concern unless all guests complained with total consistancy about it.
Due to such attitudes by management at this hotel I cannot recommend it to travelers who value both courtesy, relaxation and a good night's rest.

Hotel totally took care of friend -first time International traveler- who lost her Passport and arrived earlier in the day than I, a second time traveler to India. If you've been to India, you know: not having your Passport is a BIG DEAL!
Clean room: no bugs, no rodents, paper under the door in the morning. Metro across the street. We loved it so much, paid to keep room whilst leaving for several days, as had to come back to get lost Indian Visa, so she would be able to leave the country.
The whole hotel staff was great! From Managers (owners?) on down. Friendly and helpful. Good food in hotel, either Room Service or in Restaurant, quick and cheap laundry service, and good street food just outside the door.
I hope to be able to go back to Kolkata and the Broadway Hotel another time. I've spent 10 weeks, on two different trips to India, staying in many different cities of India, for tariffs ranging from 400 rupees to 8000 rupees per night, and I've never enjoyed a hotel as much as I enjoyed the Broadway hotel in Kolkata.

Room Tip: Our corner room on back side of Hotel, top floor, was probably less noisy than those on street side.

Competely agree with the other reviews here. This hotel is typically indian and an experience in itself.

Pros: location - right next to a metro, price, very large room, great fan, great view of the street below, real indian feel. Cheap beer & OK food at the restaurant.
Cons: Hard beds (but clean!), a bit of street noise but nothing some ear-plugs won't sort out.

The hotel has seen better days: don't be put off if it seems a bit grim at first - open the shutters, let the light in, watch the action & it'll grow on you.

As other reviewers have said, tip the staff to get the most out of your stay (they will really bend over backwards to help...perhaps too much!)

I always stay at the Broadway when I am on my way to Darjeeling and Gangtok from the UK, and also on my return trip. I have stayed there at least 8 times. The owners and staff have always been very helpful. The rooms are clean, and although not listed as such on the menue, I am able to get vegan food in the restaurant. It is also just accross the road from the metro station, so very handy for getting around. I love this hotel, a real taste of India. I hope to see them again in September 2012.

The Broadway Hotel was exactly what we hoped it would be, full of an atmosphere of 1940s colonial-era India. Some aspects of the hotel were pretty basic, no hot water, bucket showers, and no AC, however, the decor and price made it more than worth it- and the heat of Kolkata means a cold shower is exactly what you feel like anyway. The rooms are large with high ceilings and fans so you do not need AC anyway. The location is great, walking or a short taxi distance from all the great stops, and lots of good restaurants nearby.
The staff were friendly and helpful, the restaurant/bar is really fun to have a drink in at night when its packed with locals. The breakfasts are really reasonable and the masala omelettes the best we had on our trip.
The only negative that would give me pause to return is the noise at night, our room was at the back of the hotel, however, it was still really noisy at night- traffic, dogs, crows and people in the alleyway to the side of the hotel. I would return, and recommend it, but bring earplugs in case you are not a heavy sleeper or jeglag wakes you up in the night!
