“A wonderful trip!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 14, 2007

me and my husband spent 5 days in darjeeling in march. this was our first trip to India so we were not sure what to expect. the whole trip was wonderful but our stay at Shangrila Regency deserves a special mention. We booked the room from the UK by email and the manager was really helpful and gave us lots of helpful advice. The staff at the hotel were so friendly and courteous. we stayed in one of the attic rooms and could even see the mountains (when they weren't covered in cloud) from the bed!! The hotel is spotlessly clean and we enjoyed eating our breakfast in the rooftop lounge where you can have a pot of Darjeeling tea and watch the changing panorama of the hills and mountains. We had a mixed bag of weather with some rain and a lot of cloud but when the kanchenjunga is visible we could see why Darjeeling is still a popular tourist spot - its absoulutely breathtaking.

We would definitley recommend Darjeeling to any visitor to India and in particular a stay at the Shangrila Regency.

Strength: the staff: very friendly and courteous
Weaknesses: Everything else

The rooms are disappointment. Front office is of complete no use. Tariff is absolute ripoff. They arrange for airport pickup at 2600, this can be easily arranged with a big size car at only around 1600 (two way).
The name botique is misused here. The hotel is cleverly using it to justify its poor room conditions.

My wife and I spent 5 very comfortable days over Christmas at the Shangrila Regency in Darjeeling, India. While the rooms were a little small, they were excelently furnished, clean and neat. The bathroom was similarly well finished and spotless. Fresh clean towels and linen were the order of the day. The upper floor room that we had offered a good view of the majestic snow peaked Himalayas.
What we appreciated above all was the extremely friendly and helpful staff. A hot water bottle to tuck you into bed on a cold winters night gave a final homely touch. Our only criticism was the sound insulation between the two top floor rooms. The owner would do well to put better sound insulation between his dry wall partitioning. All in all we would definitely recommend.

Didn't find the Shangri-la up to the rave reviews posted here. It was pleasant enough, but I thought a bit overpriced---especially the rooms on the 1st floor. (Note that the write up in Lonely Planet is of the 4 rooms over the restaurant Shangri-la down the road--not the Shangri-la Regency. ) The Super deluxe rooms on the 3rd floor have been recently modernized and have the best views. But, being roomier, they are also colder.

The lower priced properties in Darjeeling do not have heat in the rooms---they have a portable electric heater and the Shangri-la provides a hot water bottle for your feet at night---and in December, it's COLD here. You also have to tell them to make up the room and leave the key at the reception---I learned this from another resident.

Breakfast in the restaurant upstairs is pretty good, if basic: eggs any style, plus toast and potatoes.

Luxury this is not. On the other hand, it's very convenient to the main action in Darjeeling, the Chowrastra, as well as the well known restaurants such as Glenary's. If you don't want to stay in one of the higher priced properties such as Elgin's or Mayfair, the Shangri-la is a reasonable choice.

We spent 3 nights in the Shangri-La Regency in October 2006 and where not disappointed. Staff is very organised and friendly, the rooms have character (not very common in Indai) and superb views (from the upper floors you can see Kanchenzonga in the morning sun without leaving your bed!).

  • Disliked — The breakfast jam is horrible.

We booked the hotel from London and the owner has always been quick to reply back on all occations. We had a very pleasant and memorable stay at the hotel. The staff are very attentive and efficient. This hotel should be highly recomended to all travelling to Darjeeling (unless you have loads of cash to spend in Windemere or so on) as it offers excellent value for money. Its clean, comfortable, and ideally located and kept to very high standard. They are well used to cater to the Western tourists. It is also small enough to give you the feel of the family run business. We will definately stay there again. It was a pity that the weather was memorable for not so good reasons. Will have to visit again.
