“Beautiful and peaceful hillside monastery”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 20, 2013

Great for a walk to get away from the busy Darjeeling streets. It's also on the way to the Tibetan Refugee Self Help centre. It's small and simple but very nice. Steep walk there and back though so take comfy shoes.

“A beautiful place, physically and spiritually”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 1, 2012

Set at the end of descending path with a awe-inspiring view of the mountains, this is a colorful, friendly place to enjoy a lovely sanctuary. We heard monks chanting, enjoyed a informative conversation with a local volunteer, took advantage of the prayer wheels, and wondered at the snow-covered peaks in the distance. A wonderful, wonderful morning!

“A quiet hideout @ a village gompa just down the Mall police outpost.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 23, 2012

To the left of the hill lies the huge n now crowded town of Darjeeling.......but the right side slopes still remain untouched by commercial activity or any crowed. Just few households and a typical village scene awaits you if you don't mind the bit of walk.

One morning after visiting the temple on top of Winmere hill we asked for the way and a Nepali gentleman out for his morning walk told us to follow him and directed us towards the gompa.

It was a nice walk down a narrow but well maintained road passing few houses and ultimately just trees and greenery. Three or so tiny stores were there which were yet to open.

Once at the monestry, really thanked ourselves for choosing to come. There was no body around just the trees prayer flags a dog and sound of wind. A young boy approached after some time and called the monestry head/priest who in turn opend the doors for us to get inside. The day before we had bought some prayer flags and one was put up outside by the lama himself for us.

We went upstairs as well to see the inner prayer house and talked to the lama who knew my language having being worked at my state before.

After spending some time we started the long walk back to mall side, but stopped over at one of the tiny stores that had opened its doors. A little school going girl was managing it and she offered to make for us fresh vegetable momos and maggi. So we had a nice lil breakfast at this cozy corner and the girl lovingly invited us to have breakfast there again if we were still there few days more.

We could not visit again but i left my cap at the gompa, so that cap episode made the visit even more special in some sorta way to me.

Anyways, i hope that for the years to come this place remains hidden from the crowed and one can find some solitude within minutes walk from the mall forever.
