“A hidden gem in a beautiful environment with great people!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 28, 2013 via mobile

We stayed in one of the cottages in February. Navin and his boys welcomed us warmly when we arrived and that didn't change during our 3 night stay. The service is really perfect. They brought us tea and hot water before we could even ask for it and the meals (which are included) were all delicious. Navin is a great host who can arrange all kind of trips and tours if you like. We enjoyed our stay very much and can recommend it to everyone who likes to see the rural life of this area.

We recently spent 4 days at Tathagata Farm and I would definitely recommend it. Having read the reviews on Tripadvisor we had high expectations, and we were not disappointed. Arriving at the farm after that epic jeep ride from Darjeeling was amazing, and we were greeted by beautiful views, tranquillity and a friendly welcome from Navin. When I read reviews I'm interested in knowing about the standard of accommodation, the food, the environment and the overall experience, so......
Accommodation: I'm used to home comforts, so was slightly apprehensive when I realised we were staying in tents. But I needn't have worried. Our tent was larger than my bedroom at home, and was very comfortable with big beds, carpets, lovely furnishings and a large veranda. Some of our group stayed in the chalets which were also comfortable though not as charming as the tents. Bathroom facilities are basic but fine with ensuite toilet and (cold) shower, and huge buckets of hot water appeared every morning.
Food: as fresh as you could possibly get! A good range of vegetarian and meat dishes, and always plenty of it. Plus generous offerings of the local brew. It was great to watch Navin's team rustle up meals before our very eyes.
Environment: Tathagata Farm is in a stunning setting, and we enjoyed exploring the surrounding area, visiting the village and local tea gardens. You really need to do this on foot, so a reasonable walking ability is required, although my 75 year old parents managed fine (with a little help at times). We had a great guide, Duraj, who was very friendly and happy to spend time sharing his extensive local knowledge. It was especially good to be able to learn about the local farmers' co-operative and see first hand what sustainability means in practice.
Overall experience: Brilliant! The service from Navin and team was great, and as well as the big things described above, the attention to detail made it a special experience (little touches like nice soft towels, tea served on our veranda every morning, hot water bottles at night). Navin was a great host, and obviously committed to making a positive contribution to the local environment. It was good to be able to support such a worthwhile project while having a great time!

Room Tip: Go for the tents. And take ear plugs if you're a light sleeper - lots of bird/dog noise from the...

We had a lovely stay at the farm last winter. We were looked after impeccably by Navin and enjoyed the natural wealth of the place to the full - eating from the garden, walking in the hills. Perfect!
We hope very much that more people will follow Navin's example - the experience of staying in the countryside, simply and wholesomely, is something many tourists want to do.

Note that this place is really about one hour past Darjeeling town, so you are prepared for quiet relaxation. Oh, and the road is very bumpy to get there--just be warned if you have a bad back.

Once you arrive, there are no worries! Navin is a wonderful host, and you are greeted with a pot of fresh tea grown on the property. Navin sits down to talk, show you around the farm, and talk about life in the area. Our cabin was absolutely lovely. Clean, comfortable, spacious....

The property itself is a working working farm on a tropical hillside. The tea bushes will be right outside your front door, and the veggie garden is just below the pool. Some of our meal came out of the garden, and the eggs were laid on-site. This farm is part of a larger cooperative of small, local farms, and they are happy to share all about that endeavor to those who want to learn.

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included, and Navin even convinced us to stay on for lunch our last day so we wouldn't feel rushed. The food is more Nepalese than Indian (as is much of Darjeeling's food--Nepal is so nearby!) although there is some fun fusion happening. Be aware that if you order non-veg (that means you get meat) that there likely will be small bones throughout the curries, which is kind of how Nepalese food is prepared. All our food had wonderfull flavor, and Navin arranged for us to try all the local "brews" while we were there. What fun!

Navin also arranged a hike (trek) for us including lunch at a restaurant in a neighbhoring valley, which was lovely and a very nice service for him to provide.

One suggestion: Navin, can you think of a way to get hot water taps for the shower? It was cold when we were there, and a hot shower would have made our little cabin heaven on earth! The hot water bottles were great on those cold nights.

Thank you for the fabulous experience!!!

Room Tip: Well, there's just two cabins (until Navin gets the glamping finished). We had the one lower do...

Dear explorer,

Thank you for positively reviewing Tathagata Farm. we are delighted to receive such a positive response from you for the property and your experience during the time you spent with us.
There is lot to be done and achieve at the farm, and we truly remain indebted to the travellers who ignores our mistakes and take in the atmosphere as it is. And we all at Tathagata Farm would like to thank you again for your kind words, it does mean a lot to us.
We try our best to keep it simple here, let us know if you have any suggestion and advise to improve upon or do things better in the future.
Navin is currently at the farm working hard and enjoying the simplicity, so i am writing on his behalf to thank you for the review.
Regarding hot water, it is a great suggestion and we will try and deliver it to our future travellers, the only thing is to think about how sustainably we can achieve this keeping in mind our environment and resources. It isn't hard, but it needs to be properly thought over and done. We will be working towards it and i can assure you of that.

Thank you again for your kind words, we will look forward to having you someday at teh farm again!

On behalf of the entire staff.

My wife and I went to North east for our honeymoon trip in February 2013 and Darjeeling was last leg of our journey. After staying at a high end hotel in Gangtok, I thought it'd be great to go for something different and I am glad I chose Tathagata farm. It's nothing short of heaven in the hills. Navin, the owner of this beautiful farm is truly a magnificent host. We had chosen an independent hut which is simply perfect for a honeymoon couple ;) After a bit of a bumpy ride downhill from darjeeling, we arrived at the farm. We were welcomed with homegrown tea. A short while later, we met two other couples staying at the farm (one of them even gave a review here: Hi, Stephanie S). We had great local food later that evening and spent some quality time around a small bonfire with drinks. Navin is extremely knowledgeable and can go on and on about the life of the people in the hills and their way of life. Next day we went for a long hike in the hills and I ended up getting cramps in my leg but hot water bags provided by Navin came in to the rescue. We woke up to a serene morning and a hot cup of tea and breakfast was waiting for us. The small but extremely humble staff left no stone unturned to make sure we were comfortable. We had momos and later that evening my wife cooked 'Theplas (a popular Gujarati flat-bread)' for all of us. We stayed at Tathagata Farm for 3 days and it was more than we could ask for.

Room Tip: Independent huts are great. We took the one facing the valley. New Deluxe Huts were being built we w...

As much as we all love India, it is nice to escape the craziness of the cities (yes, even Darjeeling!) by checking out these off the beaten path places. Tathagata is just that. We had such a geat experience there, despite falling ill, and were treated like family and felt very comfortable. Navin, the owner, is an impeccable host, and a riot to hang out with. He was very knowledgeable about organic farming, and India, and was a joy to sit around and chat with. He arranged a nice 21km trek for us through the hills, and went above and beyond to make our time there great. We did some cooking lessons, and even one of the other guests got to make us some food too. Every night we had drinks and snacks before dinner, and every morning there was tea to wake us up. Can't forget the nice hot water bottles to keep us warm in the relatively cool mountain nights! Rooms were big and comfortable, and the balcony overlooking the garden and farm was a nice place to hang out. The bathrooms were clean, and the hot water buckets were a nice touch!

The badest thing was, that i just had a two days-stay. I could have stayed there for weeks! And the boss of the farm Navin Tamang is a great conversationalist - i had a lot of fun with him, because at this moment i was his only guest!
It´s such a beautiful and peaceful place! And the same with the people, who are working there. They all were so friendly and and very obliging. The nepalese food got a great variety and was just delicious. It was made in a open kitchen on a fire!
The cottage was gorgeous - very lovely details, fresh flowers and a spacious bathroom. And of course a lovely balcony with flowers and the view on the hills of darjeeling!
I was also a lucky guy because they invented me to watch the traditional slaugthery of a pig in a very tiny village in the near of the farm. It was a great experience to watch how the whole family is working together on such a day. The people were so friendly and lovely - i couldn´t believe.
Its a perfect place to relax and to enjoy the nature and totally silence.
So at the end i can absolutely recommend a stay on this ecological farm with its great people and it´s professional guides and concepts!!!

Room Tip: Both rooms/cottages are great
