“A memorable dawn!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 25, 2012

Even though sunrise was predicted at 5.50am for Darjeeling and Tiger Hill was just 20 minutes away, we left for Tiger Hill at 3.30 am! Only after arriving there did we understand why. There were so many cars parked and hundreds of people clamouring for tickets (it was supposedly off-season!). At Tiger Hill, there is an observatory building with three floors- the middle and top sections are covered(Fee- Rs.30 and 40 respectively) while there is a lower open observatory deck(Rs.10). It is definitely better to take the middle/top sections as it gets really cold.

We could get tickets to the middle section only. When we reached the hall, it was packed and there were only 2 chairs empty! People were patiently waiting and order was maintained. It was a long wait in the cold damp hall which got filled to the brim by sunrise. On the day we went, unfortunately, there was cloud cover and so we couldn't see the Kanchenjunga range in glorious red or the tip of Mt Everest. When the sun did slowly show up, all hell broke loose with people sitting at the front standing up and frantically trying to record the event and everybody running to the east corner for a glimpse. So sadly, I could only get a glimpse.

But after the sunrise, the crowd thinned almost immediately and it was awesome to breathe in the crisp morning air and take in the magnificent beauty of the mountains bathed in glorious sunlight. We waited for another half an hour and the clouds cleared up to give us our first view of the Himalayan mountains- what towering beauties!

In spite of the teeming crowds, the panoramic views are worth it. Go early (especially during tourist season), dress in layers and be patient. Next time I go, I would definitely do a trek up Tiger Hill at dusk for the sunset too.

Excellent views of Sun rise and Himalayan mountains. Clearer the sky better visibility. Viewing arrangements are good. Parking arrangements may be improved.
