“High quality southern indian cuisine”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 14, 2010

This is a high quality restaurant which has been able to sustain its standards over time. I have never had a bad meal here -- their selection of non-vegetarian and vegetarian southern dishes is excellent -- and the menu clearly indicates the State of origin of each dish.

They have live music at lunch time and the occasional astrologer with a tarot-reading parrot.

I would recommend any of the fish dishes -- especially the kari-meen if its available. The thali meal is pricey but excellent value if you have an appetite. They are happy to accommodate requirements of children.

“Fine Dining South Indian Style”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 19, 2010

My husband made a dinner booking at the Southern Spice in the Taj Coromandel Hotel , Chennai to celebrate our anniversary based on an advertisement on a giant billboard . It turned out to be a memorable meal.

As we walked to the restaurant, we were very impressed with the restaurant's setting which flowed from the lush and serene garden to its elegant dining area . There was a raised platform in the garden where traditional musicians performed. It was easy to imagine a barthanatyam dancer entertaining the guests as they dined. I could hardly believe that just outside its walls, the roads were clogged with Chennai's noisy evening traffic .
(Please visit http:// sunlifeshinefree.blogspot.com/ for more travel tips on Chennai Hotels, Shopping and Restaurants) .

My concern that we would regret paying over the top prices for subdued Indian food prepared to please westerners' palette was misplaced. The thali meals were lovely and authentic. Their seafood rassam ( a spicy aromatic soup filled with prawns, fish and crabs) was so delicious that it inspired me to try making it back home.

So it is definitely worth a try.
