Perhaps the greatest criticism of Chennai's restopubs, is that they're more 'pub' than 'resto', thus questioning the appropriateness of wearing the 'restopub' tag. Zara, however, begs to differ in that it well and truly lives up to its definition. With an array of treats (a table-mat-styled menu of tapas is replete with photographs of what you're about order), there's no second-guessing that here is a restopub that gives as much importance to food, as it does to alcohol. If you're the kind that doesn't care as much for a beer as a seafood pasta or a breaded chicken breast, Zara is where you should head.
Special mention ought to be given to the pub's weekend brunch. With a table d'hote spread, and unlimited orders to go with it, you can eat all you like for as long as you want. So, be sure to try the spanish omelete, cocktail sausages, delightfully tangy pasta and the pork. They used to serve this epic coconut crepe, only to take it off the brunch menu recently (I wonder why, though; it was absolutely superb). The only downside to the brunch — and this is an increasingly annoying occurence in several restaurants — is the fact that they bring your orders one after another, with a irksome interval between them. For instance, you order the sausages, chicken strips and pork, your waiter brings you the sausages first and tells you the strips are getting ready, only for it to make an appearance a good ten minutes later. Is it just me, or doesn't everyone like eating all their at the same time? Quality, however, is right on top.
An awful lot has been written about the bad attitude of the waiters. However, a recent visit to the joint will prove that the snootiness has gone, which has resulted in better service. Don't miss the weekday lunches. Worth every rupee you pay. With great music, fun crowd, lovely ambience and amazing food, to complement the alcohol, this could well be one of the city's better restopubs around.
