The Hotel looks quite majestic from the outside; and even the hotel foyer looks like the entrance to something grand. We had booked our rooms in advance, and were looking forward to a good night's rest and a hot shower after a long flight from London. We booked a 'Double Deluxe with A/C'.
The reception staff seemed very inexperienced, hardly spoke any English and weren't welcoming at all (I had the impression they weren't expecting us). Finally we were shown to the room: The beds were made, but the pillow cases and sheets were dirty and you could still see the creases and grease from the person that had slept there the night before. The floor looked like it hadn't been cleaned for months and the bathroom was filthy. The toilet leaked, and everytime you flushed, filthy water from the toilet leaked onto the bathroom floor. Hot water was only available in the mornings. We had to give housekeeping (a good tip) to get the room cleaned and sheets changed the following day. There were coakroaches in the room also (not a rarity in India). There was a TV in the room also, with one English News Channel.
The breakfast buffet in the hotel is quite good, offering a choice between South Indian and 'American breakfast' (toast with MArmelade or cronflakes) and there is an Indian restaurant inside the hotel that has good vegetarian food.
Staff are willing, as long as you have some tip ready. Though they clearly give the impression they'd rather be somewhere else.
It's easy to see that 'Abu Palace' has seen better days and is now in desperate need of a revamp and a (very) good clean.
It's bad value for money. If you are planning to stay there, don't go after the prices listed in their website. Negotiate before you book! Their once splendour has gone, and I have stayed in better and cleaner Budget hotels whilst travelling in India.
