“visit to this grand old temple”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 25, 2013

This temple is an ancient one, stated to be 3000 years old. Very grand architecture, very well maintained by the temple authorities. The Lord is stated to be God of medicines. The belief goes that whoever visits this place and sincerely prays is cured of his illness. The temple maintains the rich traditions of Hindu culture. The temple can be reached very easily by road. It is right on the East Coast Road. The Thiruvanmiyur beach is also very close by.

“Historic Shiva temple”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 9, 2013

This temple is one of the oldest in Chennai and it's history dates back atleast a thousand years. The best thing about this temple is that they have retained the traditional architecture and it is an example of how a temple should be. I personally dislike marble flooring , wall tiles, blazing lights in temples. This temple has Shiva as the main idol and separate temple for his consort Godess Thirupurasundari, who is almost as tall as us a utterly divine and beautiful. Must visit if you're in Chennai. Temple open from early morning to twelve noon and evening till night. Can get little crowded on Pradosham days.

“An ancient temple indeed”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2013

Well maintained old shrine with a "natural" Lingam.
The corridors are clean and provide a very good ambience for meditation and prayer.
The temple I understand is more than 1000 years old with several shaivaite saints singing in praise of The Lord who is said to have cured his devotees of severe illness.

“The Divine Doctor”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2013

Located in the happening ECR road, the Marundeeswarar temple dates back to 7th Century (or may be 8th century) and is one of the 275 ‘padal petra Stalams’(hymns have been sung by Nayanmars on this temple). Marundeeswarar (or Lord Shiva) is a doctor who has supposedly taught sage Agastya the science of medicine. Sage Valmiki, author of Mahabharatha, is believed to have visited this temple (and hence the name Thiru-Valmiki-Oor or Thiruvanmiyur) and a temple dedicated to Valmiki was constructed opposite to the main temple gate on the ECR road. The temple tank is in a pathetic condition. This legendary temple is a must-visit for art and animal lovers for it is structural designs and the lovely goshala (Cow shelter).

“A good and historic Shiva Temple.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 18, 2013

This is a historic temple where many saints belonging to Tamilnadu achieved closeness to Shiva . One goes with the hope of getting the grace of the Lord and end up getting some satisfaction. Wish the trustees pay more attention to maintaining cleanliness and transform the place with some props to develop a religious atmosphere. It is close to the busy street and is a kind of distraction.
