Owner description: Probably the most magnificent and prominent reminder of Chennai's colonial lineage, the San Thome Church bears a colossal amount of history since A.D. 52, the year when St. Thomas traveled to India, though the Roman Catholic basilica was built in the 16th century by the Portuguese. It was then rebuilt by the British in 1893. The imposing structure reaches a height of 155 feet and emanates peace and architectural splendor with its tall spires over the tomb of the saint. The sea makes a wonderful backdrop to the pristine white structure. The San Thome Church is considered one of the pilgrimages for people around the world.

What a treat to be able to see where St. Thomas is buried. Very holy place, only one of three places on earth where a deciple is buried at a church.

“I love it”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 29, 2013

This is nice, calm church to be visited. One of the basilica in the world, wher saint Thomas was buried under. Actually i already come on Saturday, they said every 30 minutes will be held some short mass. Lovely white church, i ever visit. This location easily to reached by tuk tuk, auto or if u like to walk along from Marina beach it will be OK.. Afteee this church, next destination,
I dream to go to Italia where St Peter was buried and going to Basilica in Greek. ***

“Something missing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2013

This is an interesting place to reflect on the life of Thomas and his testimony, but for me the place itself was a little empty. I much preferred St Mary's church (inside St George's fort), which is said to be the oldest church east of the Suez and has a feel of history and tranquility, while at the same time being a living church.

You should research the early churches of the British which have so much history....I have the photos thereof as I went to about three of them...and near the Fort and also the St Andrew Church of the Scots....it was the Scots who helped to build the Indian Nation.
