“Hot and Sweaty treasure hunting”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 25, 2012

We went here twice during our trip to Chennai and every time it seemed like there was no air conditioning and it was very busy with tourists and locals alike.

There is all sorts to buy here from tobaconists and supermarkets to local handicrafts and clothing. There are a lot of shops and as such there is a lot to see, but especially the smaller interesting shops seem to wait for tourists and the shop keepers can be very pushy... However feel free to haggle a little.

A tip is that if you took a Visa cash card, use the HSBC cashpoint on to ground floor in the main atrium area as it does not seem to work in many places. Even the Thomas Cook on the ground floor (the company we got the card from in the UK) would not accept it in the same way as a credit or debit card to buy rupees.

This seemed to be one of the better malls in Chennai for tourists wishing to buy local wares at an afordable price... For designer outlets and higher end items have a look at somewhere like Citi Center Mall.

“A Chennai must see for its blend of traditional Haggling with a twist of European style”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2012 via mobile

Spencers has been around for yonks, and admittedly, its age is showing. The shops are geared for ex pats, tourists, and middle class Chennaiites, and haggling/ higgling is expected. Tat and treasure sit side by side, so feel free to hunt till you find what you are after, and be firm but fair in your bargaining. The food court is short on choice these days, but the one must see shop for me is Landmark, perfect for books, mags, (legitimate) music and movies. I have kept my nearest and dearest stocked up on pashminas, wood and stone carvings and pillow covers

“Lots of souvenir opportunities if you can be bothered”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 24, 2012 via mobile

Went here for some scarves and other crafts- unfortunately it was during monsoon season and there were several leaks resulting in slippery floors. Plenty of shops to look around for tourists and some lovely scarves, pashminas etc but shop owners can be persistent and some of the better bargains are in the small shops down the "alleys".

“Good Place”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 28, 2011

This is the most oldest shopping mall in Chennai. By keeping in mind 'OLDEST', it has very good facilities for the visitors like restaurants, Toilets, escalator, lifts, parking space, atms etc. Its a HUGE one. There are lots of Branded and non branded outlets. Anything you want to buy like dresses, watches, shoes, accessories, computers items, ladies corner, jewelleries you'll get here.
Some of the bigger outlets are: Pantaloons, Westside, Landmark, Planet Fashion
Apart from these there are lots of individual showrooms like Reebok, Nike, Adidas, Levis, Wrangler etc

ATMs are there in the ground floor. The parking charges are very much reasonable.
But the Toilets are not so clean.

“Good but miss the old Spencers”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 7, 2011

Visited Spencer Plaza quite a few times. went to the internet parlours which I thought were really giod if the power did not go off when you were half way thorugh sending an e-mail! Loved shopping for souvenirs to take back home. Liked the food court. But the crowds were just too much and on a day when the AC was not functioning due to one of those awful power cuts it was pretty stifling in there. Did see a replica of the old Spencers which had its own heyday and I felt very nostalgic seeing that. Spencers was truly an institution to remember.
