“Typical 5-star hotel in Chennai”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 4, 2014

We spent one night at the Hyatt Regency. The room was spacious. The service was excellent. If you want a 5-star hotel in the heart of the city, you should consider this as an option. But it was too busy inside and it felt like a mall. The saving grace is their restaurant Spice Haat. We had a super duper buffet breakfast (Indian and continental selections) and an outstanding dinner for a group of friends at the same restaurant.

Room Tip: Higher floors preferred as this is an atrium design.

Where can I start. The location of the Hotel is just terrible. It is very central but danger awaits as soon as you leave the Hotel gates. Not even a safe crossing in sight. The security to enter the Hotel is as tight as in an airport. This immediately gives a cold and impersonal vibe.

Our first impression of the Hotel room was just 'is this it?'. One of the most bland and boring rooms we have ever stayed in. Not even a picture to give some colour and welcome.

We went for a 7 day vacation to experience the magic of India. India was magic with its colour, smells and the hustle & bustle. First two days my husband and I spent discovering the city. Well, rest of the days we spent in our hotel room with severe food poisoning.

We are not sure how we managed to get ill as we tried our best to follow other travellers advice about India. It could have been from anything and anywhere.

Because of this unfortunate circumstances we had to spend the rest of our holiday in the Hotel room. Therefore, the comfort and service of the Hotel became very important more than usual.

As we spent majority of our time in India in our room, we got to know the view from the room very well. The city view was different and had its own charm, however, straight down near the Hotel was a huge pile of garbage. A five star Hotel should ensure their guests don't have to endure looking at garbage.

We also had many mosquito bites from inside the Hotel. That is unbelievable. Again a five star Hotel with mosquitos, not a good thing.

We saw a local doctor who gave us a cocktail of drugs written on a hotel notepad. This was a strange experience.

While stuck in our room, to our horror the hot water stopped. One can imagine how we tried to cope with food poisoning and endless visits to the toilet and no means of washing ourselves. Cold water was very cold.

Every time we asked when the water will come back on, we were told 1 hour or so. The water did not come back on for 24 hours. When it did come back after 24 hours it was brown and smelly. After we complained and asked for some compensation for the lack of hot water we were given a discount. It was minuscule but at least they took some sort of responsibility for the guests well being. We wished it was proactive rather than something we had to bring up and ask for.

All the above is terrible and we certainly won't return to this Hotel.

But, we must praise the front desk staff for their friendly and amazing professionalism. Always smiling and willing to help.

Dear Guest

Greetings from Hyatt Regency Chennai.

Thank you for sharing your feedback with us. We regret the inconvenience caused to you during your stay and really appreciate your detailed feedback on the experience. We have made a note of the concerns and stay assured they will be taken care of immediately. As for the garbage dump, the same is owing to the metro rail construction project and there is only little we can do to resolve the same till the project is underway.

We sincerely appreciate your insights and look forward to providing you with a more memorable experience during your next stay with us. We look forward to welcoming you soon.

good location, prime areas nearby. impressive interior decor but changing elevators to get to upper floors is a hassle. nice restaurants. very hospitable staffs. room were modern and the view of the city outside was impressive, but the housekeeping department was a bit slow and had to be reminded for things. breakfast was one of the best parts of the stay, extensive with staffs always ready to help you around just a little slow though, but since ours was a leisurely trip so we didn't mind waiting a little. there was a mall next door which was decent enough. overall good stay if you are ready to splurge.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 31, 2014 via mobile

Sorry guys to have to write this bad review.

Arrived here this January with great expectations and let me explain why I didn't like this hotel one bit.

Firstly when you arrive at the hotel you have to enter the hotel on the ground floor level and then enter hotel up through the lift to I think 4 the floor.
On arrival we could hear music blasting from lobby bar at around 17:00 hours , ok no problem just checking in.
Upgraded to club level and check in very smooth, from here all went down hill.

Rooms , very modern and we liked a lot BUT very damp feeling to rooms.

Bar area
Very nice and modern with good service , outside smoking area TERRIBLE , scruffy and flooring looks unfinished not a nice area to sit out hardly any lighting.
Decided to go for a drink in here Sunday afternoon , oh my god, we all waked in around 15:00 and there was rave music pounding out from the speakers and DJ in there , asked the DJ could you please turn it down , his reply was sorry but this us the theme for Saturday and Sunday 14:00 till 20:00!!!! I said are you joking there is no one in and it sounds like I am in a night Club in Ibiza and this is Sunday afternoon, yes sorry have to leave it on.
Obviously this isn't done for hotel customers but to attract young outside customers into the bar , can understand say Friday or Saturday night but Sunday afternoon NO.

Pool
Have to go up one level through Gym and back down again , feels like not part of the hotel

Biggest problem
There are Mosquitos all over the hotel , got bit loads which is a massive put off.

Club lounge
Best place in the hotel and great staff and service.

Staff
All great in the hotel and didn't have any issues on this side.

Breakfast
Great spread of food but service bad , waited for eggs twice for 20 mins or didn't get at all.

Sorry guys for the bad comments but all staff were great

Excellent hotel - liked it's honeycomb theme - something different. Staff well trained, helpful. As I said in the headline...exclusive, exceptional...expensive! Somewhat painful to navigate the road with the metro work cluttering the route...and impacting business timelines!!

Room Tip: Pay higher and take the room with the breakfast rates built in...but if you make the mistake to go f...
