“Superb Bengali restaurant in Chennai!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 30, 2011

It is probably the best Bengali restaurant in Chennai. It is conveniently located. The atmosphere is good. Biriyani,Mutton curry,Aloo Dum,Prawn Malai curry.....I couldnt have expected anything more. Food is great and service is quick. Infact there are very few restaurants in Chennai where north-indian food is prepared the way it should be. All the bengalis dying to eat bengali food in chennai should visit this place. Price is reasonable. They have good desserts like malpoa and kheer too. They also have home delivery but within a limited are. It gets a bit crowded on weekends thoughI will certainly visit this restaurant when I to Chennai again.

“Bengali and Punjabi- but not the real thing!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 19, 2011

Everything is ok, but you would not go back unless you had to. The menu has Punjabi and Bengali dishes, I was disappointed as a Bengali, and my colleague was disappointed as a Punjabi. The owner is very hospitable though, one could go back just for her!

“Good place for Bengali and Punjabi food in Chennai”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 26, 2010

This was my first visit to Bay Leaf and I was pleasantly surprised. We happened to have all vegetarian dishes that day, but everything was excellent. The veg fried rice was to die for! We also had romali roti and dhal makhani. For someone who can't handle spicy food anymore it was the perfect choice. The place is small and quaint. NOTE: if you're still hungry and the kitchen is closed, do what we did ... Ask for plain steamed basmati rice and clean out the bowls carrying your side dishes!

“The Bong Connection”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 19, 2010

If time in Chennai permits you to try a non-South Indian cuisine, you should make it to Bay leaf situated right behind Chennai's famous Gangotri (Chat shop- where you get the world's best Pani-Puris).

Though the waiters will struggle a little bit and probably feed you someone else's order as well, the food opens up the world to West Bengal's delicacies. From Paturi (Fish wrapped in leaf with masala's and then fried/steamed) to some Bhetki fry (a very differently fried Red Snapper). The best way to begin the meal is by ordering some Bhetki Maach bhaja (fish fry), followed by Dal rice and aloo posto (poppy seed paste with potatoes), followed by Chingri Macher Bati chochodi (Prawn curry) and Paturi. The mutton there is fabulous too. Another signature dish is the Pabda maach.

The only thing is that not all signature dishes will be cooked in mustard oil, which is the base in which most food is cooked (like how olive oil or coconut oil is used in different cuisines) to make the food edible for all tastebuds. Mustard oil has a sharp, pungent taste which makes the food enjoyable, but several people have allergies, or cannot bear the smell of mustard oil.

I would however not recommend that you end the meal with Gajar Ka Halwa with Icecream as the Gajar (Carrot) used is not the authentic Delhi red carrot. The Malpuha is worth a bite. A meal for 4 can range upto Rs 1500

“Tasty, Reliable, and Accessible”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 28, 2009

My wife and I are Americans, living in in Chennai for around two years. We've been very happy with Chennai's restaurant scene, but have a few go-tos in a pinch. Bay Leaf is one such restaurant, and their delivery service is consistently good. Though I speak some Tamil, even in English most delivery orders over the phone are difficult in either language. Not so here. The staff is courteous and helpful and the food is to die for. Though we're not from India, we're glad to have this peak into the other reviewer's grandmas' kitchens. Highly recommended.
