“Incredible value for location, except for dance club next door”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 16, 2012

Hotel Lawrence is ideally located for tourists at a fraction of the price of other hotels.

Don't worry too much about the stories of sketchy alleys and stairwells. It is true you have to walk 30 meters down a side street to find the stairwell (on the right, small hotel sign at eye level), but it did not seem unsafe. Same with the stairwell: guy sleeping on 1st floor landing, sacks of something blocking much of the stairwell, unpainted wood, but well-lit at night and not apparently unsafe. The hotel staff are professional and helpful. Rooms are basic budget, though cleaner and brighter than average. Bring your own bedsheet and toilet paper. Common bathrooms are scrubbed daily but still budget common bathrooms... except for the lovely surprise of hot water (!) once you figure out how to operate it. The one on the end had the best hot water. Breakfast was decent.

Only downside was the (upscale) dance club across the side street. Bring heavy-duty earplugs, or don't come back to the hotel between 10PM and 1AM. If there were no dance club next door I would have given this hotel a five star.

Even considering the dance club and unattractive exterior, this is a stunning budget value for Mumbai.

Room Tip: Try to get one on the left side of the hallway. Maybe they are shielded a little bit from the dance...

Great hotel in a very good area, nice and close to Colaba, it took us 10 minutes to walk to the Gateway of India. Rate included a desent breakfast of chai, breadroll, butter and banana, which was great. Shared bathroom is alright and quite clean, the room and linen were perfectly clean. Noisy at night, but not too bad at all. Manager is not the friendliest of people, but fine. Recommended.

Room Tip: The last room on the right has 2 windows facing the street, nice view and nice and cool too.

Good value for money. Conveniently located, just stone's throw away from The Gateway of India. Basic but clean rooms. Shared bathrooms that leave a lot to imagination but friendly and helpful staff that goes this extra mile. The staircase leading to the hotel could easily put you off but don't let this happen. The hotel is worth climbing these three sets of stairs.

This place is in a fantastic location, right around the corner from India Gate and down the street from Colaba. Rooms are very basic, but clean, and there were no bedbugs in my room. The staff was super friendly; they let me check in early in the morning and ordered a taxi for me at midnight! They also bring breakfast to your room. I really enjoyed my stay here.

price 600 single room... 700 for a double room. common bathrooms (3 are available) look like 20 years old, but are quiet clean anyway... rooms very simple. Dont expect any luxuries! even towels not included... but it works anyway, no bedbugs, no mould... quiet but close to pulsing spots. i liked it here, especially for this price (little breakfast included)

We were shocked by the entrance to the building and almost went elsewhere but glad we persevered and climbed the staircase of doom! The owner was friendly and very helpful and we found the rooms light and airy and clean. The location is great and breakfast is a bonus. The hot shower was unexpected and much appreciated! Overall a great deal for Mumbai.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 21, 2011

I stayed here at the end of July 2011, coming from a cheaper but horrible place. These were my only experiencies in cheap Mumbai places, but I have travelled around India and Nepal and this is among the best places I have stayed for such a cheap price.

I was a little afraid of bedbugs because of two former reviews, but I have not had any similar problem; no other bugs either.

The manager was truly kind and helpful, and gave me advice about some things and even lent me a city map. I also talked to another staff member and he was very friendly.

The room was not big but OK. Bedsheets were clean and bed acceptably comfortable. As it is in a little street coming from a not very busy big street, it was also pretty quiet considering being in Mumbai. The location was good, nearby Gateway of India and several restaurants and a cybercafe. There was also free filtered water, that is a nice detail, and even some books and guides at reception.

On the bad part, there were no plugs in the room, so I had to bring my laptop to reception to use it. The shared bathrooms were very acceptable for Indian standards but poor for Western ones, although they were reasonably clean. For some people, it could be shocking that there were people sleeping in the steps leading to the hotel from 8-9 pm, but they looked absolutely harmless and said nothing to me.

To conclude, I would say that it is a very good option for staying there some nights at a very cheap rate.
