I would say this place is on its way to becoming one of the most sought-after restaurants in Bombay; I have been there thrice already. It's a fantastic addition and contribution to Peddar Road and the Cumballa Hill area which really lacked a good eating joint for so many years.
I'm tempted to give a 5-star rating to Under the Banyan Tree, even though one of my grouses is that they don't provide free water. You have to pay for a bottle of water.
This makes the place more like a 'canteen', while the food, ambiance, and pricing go with a place that is a proper restaurant. Given the restaurant's pricing and location and ambiance, I think it is a shame that they should charge for drinking water.
The food is unbeatable, and really tasty. Each and every item is well-made, and their pizzas are appetising, the bread crust crisp and fresh, and the toppings varied and colourful. The sandwiches, the baked potato items, as well as the pastas have a quality that few restaurants have retained in Bombay.
What I liked most about the place is that it has a local flavour; the Sophia college lane and the greenery really do remind you of some of Bombay's old charms. The benches and tables are actually placed in an open space in a corner under a banyan tree, true to its name, and can be a delightful place to sit and lounge, over a chat with friends, or over a book, on any evening.
During the monsoons, if it is drizzling or even pouring heavily, it is nothing short of beauty; it's like being at a hill station -- even while you are right in the middle of bustling South Bombay's Peddar Road. You'll be safely tucked under the tree as you munch over your chips and pizzas.
The quality of the coolers and drinks was average. The service really needs to improve if they want to get noticed and stick around and improve their visibility. Water cannot be charged for, and MUST be served in glasses on the table. They also did not accept card payment, which is a problem.
I really want to keep my faith that these issues are going to improve soon, and that the restaurant will maintain and retain its fabulous quality of food, and not move away from this location.
Overall, I'd say the place is a must-go.
