Last evening our family decided to try the "fine dine" Italian restaurant Spaghetti Kitchen at Khar off Linking Road. This is located in the same building as Copper Chimney, above the Toyota showroom on bustling Khar Danda Road.
Being a Friday night, we had booked a table but it was quite empty at 8.30pm when we arrived. The restaurant has a spacious feel and the first thing one notices is the beautiful Chettinad style tiled floor. The tables too were topped in decorative mosaic. Very nice indeed but this is not a review about decor.
Both the drinks and the meal menu had a large selection to choose from. We ordered a round of drinks, a starter, a pasta main course, a pizza main course, a side dish, a salad and dessert.
Portions were fair but not generous. The waiters were smiling and courteous but brought the side dish first even before the starter!
The pasta was tasty but average, nothing extraordinary about it considering this is a speciality Italian restaurant.
Oregano, chilli flakes, olive oil, salt and pepper were on the table but not cheese. I wanted more cheese in my pasta and had to ask for extra cheese which was brought promptly and just as promptly taken away from the table after serving us a meager spoonful! I had to ask for the cheese to be brought again. Considering the steep prices, the least Spaghetti Kitchen could do would be to keep cheese along with the oregano etc. Cheese is after all a staple of Italian food and it must be on the table for those who want a cheesier taste than the stingy portion in the dish.
The pizza was terribly sub standard, especially for the very steep price. Spaghetti Kitchen's regular crust is called a "Cracker crust". It was overcooked and far too crisp and hard. The filling was conspicuous by its absence! Now there can be no doubt that the taste of a pizza depends on two things: the base - which was awful and the topping - which was barely there.
I was surprised at how poor the pasta and pizza were considering that a sister concern Bombay Blue which is also lower priced than Spaghetti Kitchen, serves an excellent pasta and pizza, in fact BBs pizza is outstanding. Very disappointing. The waiter asked how the food was and I told him how bad the pizza was but he simply shrugged. I know that the waiter had not cooked the food but the least he could have done was to call the captain or the chef himself. Or at least to say he would convey our disappointment to the chef.
The Greek salad that we ordered was a tad too oily and we had to hunt for the meager portion of feta cheese within.
The starter and side dish were good, the dessert - wildberry frozen yogurt - standard ice cream from Gelato which is also owned by the same management, was strictly okay.
My napkin was so heavily starched that it felt like the rough side of coarse sandpaper when I wiped my mouth with it! When I brought this to the attention of the waiter he simply said oh it must be new, without offering to replace it.
We certainly will not be back here again.
