“As-cot to be a winner!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 19, 2009

As arranged the driver was waiting for us at the airport arrivals as promised with placard in hand. Good start! Beware, we had a slight problem with a complete stranger taking our bags to the car and then asked for money although the driver made no attempt to discourage it. Minor glitch.

After about an hour drive we arrived at the hotel. First impressions were very pleasing! Just to give you an idea, marble floors, chic interiors, very clean and tidy, spacious, and a nice touch of luxury.

Regarding our room (102), we had a very nicely sized one with tons of room with a balcony overlooking Garden Road. The service provided by the hotel was top notch: a same day laundry service was available with pristine results, a 24 hour room service, a decent basic breakfast and the reception staff were helpful especially the lovely young ladies.

The location of Ascot couldn't have been any better for all the main sights. Just a short 10 min walk to the Gateway Of India and The Taj Palace Hotel.
Check out Voodoo nightclub for an added treat to your holiday, you will find out why for yourself!!

Be sure to take a leisurely stroll down Colaba Causeway with the view to buying everything in creation from the very welcoming street vendors including knock off aftershaves, magic drums, inflatable peanut balloons and then finishing off with a chicken Maharaja Mac at McDonalds.

On to the subject of food, we ate at some nice places including The Taj Palace, Mings Chinese and Theobrama bakery. One place that wasn't as good was Cafe Mondegar where unfortunately I ate some sausages that didn't agree with me and I ended up getting a stomach upset the next day and made plenty of trips to the toilet being sick.

The only down side of the time spent in Mumbai was on our departure. The taxi driver provided by the hotel firstly took us to the wrong airport, then after getting to the correct airport we then were dropped off at the wrong terminal building.

All in all, a very pleasureable stay and I would recommend this hotel to anybody. We are in fact looking to stay again in this very hotel next year, all being well.

We previously stayed at the Godwin on same street- this is miles better. The staff were great, we arrived from Trivandrum Train at 6am hoping to at least leave our luggage they were good enough to give us coffee and the room at 7.30 am. Our room was huge with AC They allowed us to use internet for free including charging IPODs. From here you are in the centre of most things. Leopolds is a short walk away for Western relief. This hotel is a good choice.

I can't believe anyone could say this was just an ordinary 3 star hotel. I would rate it 4 star at least. We knew that it would be very hit or miss in India and we booked this hotel due to other reviews on Trip Advisor and weren't disappointed. It's good for the price and was clean and the beds were comfortable. There were also many little extras we weren't expecting the free internet, bathroom scales, fridge, lovely bathroom etc. Also, the service was very courteous.
We did book the airport pick up and yes I did check a couple of times that it would be coming for us by emailing a few days ahead. We were still told by Indian friends that it would probably be an hour late but it wasn't and it was waiting at the airport with our name on a card. It couldn't have been easier. If you don't want to pay the price of the Taj but want a very nice and comfy stay (with tv, cable, internet and free breakfast) then this is the place for you. Location is great too - very near the Taj, Gateway to India and Leopolds cafe. Can't rate this place enough. Our next stop was a hostel in Delhi and you could not have 2 more different experiences!!

I stayed at the Ascot for one night. The hotel is just off the Colaba causeway and is very central. It is clean from the outside and has been built to a high spec. The rooms are clean, modern and well equipped although our TV didn't work, probably down to flat batteries in the remote control or the wrong remote being in the room. The floors are marble as are most of the walls.

I had the impression that the hotel was built to a high spec originally but as time goes on things stop working due to lack of maintenance. We had a loose tap in our room and a switch for a light which could not be used.

Also beware as the internet is not WiFi but an eternet connection so be careful all you owners of iPods and iPhones

I thought reception was a bit sleepy since we origially booked two rooms but only got one. Also they seemed unsure about the check out date which is clearly stated in my confirmation.

The attention to the guests is faltering and sometimes a bit slow. The comprehension of English also seems a bit weak sometimes.

It probably was not great value at 6,000 per night since for 2,500 more we could have found something at a very nice hotel which we did resort to eventually.

It's OK but we wouldn't stay there again.

After reading the reviews we thought this must be the hotel to stay at! The rates are quite high but I gather that is going rate in Mumbai. We arrived on the Saturday with the arranged aiport pick up through the hotel (charged at 900 INR) . When we booked we asked for a non smoking room. We were shown into a lift along with two porters and our two suitcases. Quite small! When we got to our room we founbd it odd that the porter knocked on the door, there was a member of staff sitting in it and the room smelled of smoke. We turned around and asked whether we could be moved to a non smoking room. We were told we had to wait for a few minutes. After about 25 minutes we were shown to another room which was very spacious and with lovely decor but two single beds pushed together. We asked whether it was possible to have a room with a double bed. We were told this was the only room available apart from the suite which would cost extra. We were also told that we could just wait until the other room didn't smell of smoke anymore!

We asked whether we could move the next day as we were there for a two night stay. They said they would see what they could do. The next day we left for some sightseeing and told them that we will be back around 2pm to move to another room (check out is 12h00) . When we arrived at 3pm they said the room was not ready yet! We came back at 4pm and were allocated our new room key. The room again was very spacious and appeared clean. When i took a shower however the showerfloor had not been cleaned and was covered in hair. At this point i decided to just keep quiet as thankfully we were leaving the next day. The gentleman behind the reception organised a taxi to the aiport which cost only 450 INR.

The location couldn't be better and the size of the rooms are great. Pitty about the service and the unwillingness of some staff to make sure that guests are looked after. We would not recommend the hotel.

We arrived in Mumbai at 6.00 a.m. on the overnight sleeper from Goa. The room at the Ascot had been booked for that night but check in was 12 noon. Nevertheless, when we arrived at the hotel at 7.00 a.m . we were offered complimentary coffee and the room was available within 20 minutes. Fantastic courtesy and service. On the afternoon of departure we stayed in the room until 2.00 pm and returned for our luggage ( and a wash) at 7.00 pm before heading for the airport. The receptionsit organised a metered AC taxi that cost less than 500 rupees to the International airport.
The location is excellent with a pleasant stroll to the Gateway and all the sights in that vicinity. Good vegetarian restaurant at Kamat (fabulous thalis); Leopold's was nice in a busy and loud way; the large Chinese restaurant nearby also looked good.
Breakfast at the Ascot was adequate --- there were other good places, if required, nearby. Go to Fabrindia shop for shirts, kurtas, curtains etc.
