the conference room in this hotel is well managed, Room is very much clean and mattresses is amazing, you can get sound sleep here.
only negative about this hotel is the staff behaviour, however it is good but not like other 4 star hotels.

My wife & I arrived at the hotel at 12.30 am (mid night). I had booked a room for 2 nights in advance + the car to pick us up. We knew that there would be additional charges for the pick up but never expected what they billed us later (at checkout) It was Rs. 2000/- (approx 45 US) for a trip of 35-40 minutes.

Now let me describe the check-in process
The security staff (very polite, even apologetic) made us open our suitcases to check them visually, physically, right outside the gates first.

Then we reached the front desk for check in. We were made to wait for almost 10 minutes (while the gentleman receptionist was busy talking on the phone - there were no guests checking in or out at at that time).

Then I was told that the booking was made for only 1 person (myself).
Any attempts to convince him that while I booked the room on their internet site I had entered 2 people did not make any change about the expression on his face:
Stony silence followed.

I had a print out of the booking confirmation. It said "1 person"
I had failed to notice it.

I will explain later on, How this happened (it was not my oversight alone) and
How you can avoid this. Let me continue my story

Finally , asked him "So what now?" Silence followed. So I initiated the next steps.
Question "Pay more money?"
Answer "Yes"
Question "How much",
Answer "1000 Rs. more"
Question: "per night?"
Answer "Yes".
Question "Plus Taxes?
Answer: "Yes"

We were not in a position to find a taxi at 1 am at night to find another hotel. Moreover the whole weekend (2 nights) rent was already charged to my credit card (which was 12,400 Rs. approx i.e. 139USD per night, including the Luxury tax) The total rental for 2 nights for 2 people now stood at 320USD or 14,400 Rs.

We checked in. Room was spacious. Pillows were real nice. Had a 32" TV.
There was no doubt, the room was really good. I admit that

But then the Bathroom was crammed. There was no shower space (Stand inside the tub, turn on the shower was the alternative).

Food was even more expensive. 110/- Rs. (2.44 USD) for a bottle of mineral water.
Rs. 300/- (6.67USD) for plain simple Dhaal.

Morning Breakfast was "free". But horrible.

Luckily we stayed only for 2 nights. We checked out after our personal event (a wedding).
But the poor service continued.

We left our luggage (2 x 20 inch suitcases) with them, and went shopping. Check out time is 12 noon. We had 9 hrs till our flight. We reached the hotel (at 630PM approx) only to find another gentleman receptionist, equally rude and almost silent. I had to wait for 10 minutes till he hung up the phone. Then another 10 minutes while he searched for the concierge. Then another 5 minutes for the opening the locks and retrieve the suitcases. We reached the airport just in time.

Do not stay here, if you want any / basic service.

If you really want to stay here, after seeing the photos on their internet site,
Here are some tips on how to avoid the 1 guest vs. 2 guests error.

If you book room on their website, you would be asked to choose a package
I had chosen the Zen (Weekend) package. By default this package is only for 1 person
There is no way you can make the booking for 2 people later on
*note that usually hotel websites allow you to make that change from 1 to 2
Usually you are asked to fill in (or choose) how many adults & children are there,
and how many rooms do you need.
Here, you need to choose a package, of 2 people to begin with.

As much as any delay in a service provided is unacceptable, it is important to understand that every guest has to be given his due importance. An associate who is answering a query of a guest over the telephone, will not drop that call on seeing another guest in his presence. An associate is trained to acknowledge the presence of another guest, if he is already handling one guest; however, at certain times, depending on the situation at hand, minor delays are bound to occur.

Most good hotels offer various Special Packages & Promotions from time to time. The packages have the rates and inclusions very clearly mentioned and the hotel cannot be held responsible for this information being overlooked by a guest. As suggested, any guest must clearly decide on the package and the rate that he requires before deciding on his booking.

We do appreciate the positive remarks, wherein a rating of 5 has been given for Room and 4 for Cleanliness. However, a few thought must be given to the logical reasoning for various negatives that seem to have been given more prominence.

The booking was made on an advance purchase rate, which is the reason for a pre-charge on the credit card. In addition, the guest was upgraded to the next available category, which has apparently been ignored completely.

Stringent security checks are being carried out with the prevailing sensitive situation in our country and Mumbai city in particular. Due thought and training has been put in for ensuring minimum discomfort to a guest. We have also conducted sufficient survey through trained personnel to check on the best possible option. Baggage that is placed in store is also thoroughly scrutinized, which indeed may cause a few extra moments in the entire procedure. However, these are carried out, in view of ensuring guest and property safety and security.

Our Breakfast has a wide spread of food items and they are cyclic in nature. In addition, there are various hot food options to order from, which is as per guest requests and availability and this is prominently displayed at the Breakfast counter. In addition, the staff do check with guests when they are seated at the restaurant for Breakfast. The price of various food items or services are clearly mentioned and these are also decided after a proper market survey by qualified professionals. We would also like to highlight the fact that the price for Dal, is currently Rs. 215 as against the Rs. 300 that has been quoted in the feedback. It is important for guests also to realize that such out of context remarks are damaging to the image of an hotel. As a guest, he has all the privilege to decide on what he needs to order, as none of the services are forced upon a guest, who patronizes our restaurant. Further, it may be noted that Gulmurg is amongst one of the most popular spots in this part of the city. As for the claim of SURPRISE CHARGES, an email was sent to the guest clearly defining the charges applicable for an airport transfer, as per guest request.

In Mumbai city, very few hotels have a separate shower cubicle and bath tub. These preferences are also taken as a request from the guest at the time of his reservation or check in and is allotted as per availability at the time of check in or during the stay period. Further, the size of the bathroom confirms to the standards laid down by the Department of Tourism, Government of India, who classifies all hotels, not just in the city, but in the entire country.

Every employee at the hotel is given extensive training in guest relations and service. However, we apologize for any act on the part of our associate, which may have unduly upset the guest. We believe that a guest feedback is of utmost importance as it helps us improve our facilities and services, but, it is unfair that we be penalized for a guest overlooking information and the charges applicable for various services.

ThanQ

If you are a bargain hunter....this is for you!!! Let me warn you......bathrooms are dirty...the taps are rusty. The only good part about this hotel was that it is close to business district. Sorry I would not recommend this place unless they have recently revamped it!!

The Shalimar Hotel, Mumbai is committed to extending exemplary service to every guest who we interact with. We believe in the ethos of "Athithi Devo Bhava" and offer a very good example of the best Indian Hospitality.

Any feedback, positive or negative is taken in the right spirit and all negative feedback is given attention by the management at the highest echelon.

We have been offering extensive hospitality for close to 50 years and almost 85 % rooms have been completely revamped, through a planned and phased fashion. Besides a complete refurbishment, we also ensure that remaining rooms are continuously upgraded with the best amenities and fixtures.

We acknowledge this feedback, though we are unable to identify any guest who was so disappointed with our services and facilities, as most of our guests are met by management representatives during their stay.

Space is a big consideration in Mumbai and specially so in Main Mumbai. Shalimar Hotel is a comfort zone if you have business or leisure in Main Mumbai. It is far away from the Airports and there are better choices available near the airports. The rooms are cozy and comfortable, the indian food is good and service is good too. It is a bit pricey due to its location, but like I said, if you have business in main mumbai, u can opt to stay here. It has bakery shop of its own a new restrobar and all other frills needed at a small hotel. Compact yes, the rooms, the hotel itself, but clean. The staff is courteous and helpfull and all in all an ok-ok hotel. But not a four star property as advertised by them.

I stayed here amidst the recession. It was an effort to have some cost-savings for the company for the usual stay at the Taj. This was a mistake.

This hotel has inept management that is running a mockery of a hotel. One of the issues of traveling anywhere in India, is the ridiculous cost of accommodations and services within hotels, so I will not judge Shalimar solely for this. However, I was staying at the hotel for 40 days, at a rate of $180 USD per night. Meaning, we were giving them a significant chunk of money.

The Bad?
-Management told me that phone calls to Canada (my country of permanent residence) were very reasonable. After speaking for a total of 9 hours, I received a bill for $1,200USD, yes, $1,200 USD or at a rate of $2.22 per minute, this compares to a rate of 4 cents a minute from your regular landline or cell phone in India

-Internet costs $20 USD per day. No long-term discount was given, despite my lengthy stay there

-The accommodations are rather sad. They are very 'Indian' rather than an international business hotel. This is not a compliment, this means inadequate showers, dirty carpet, a lot of dust, and old furniture damaged by humidity and a 19" TV Screen

-The fitness centre is worse than my home gym.

THE GOOD?
-The food is awesome.

We had booked this hotel through www.hotels.com specifying a non smoking room. As soon as we landed in mumbai at 1 pm we called the hotel to confirm our booking including the non smoking room and to expect our check in at 5 pm. We arrived at the hotel at 5 pm. To our disapointment they said there was no non smoking room !!! upon making scene at the lobby they promised us a suite. After waiting for an hour in the lobby the so called suite was not ready and they receptionist was completely clueless about what was happeninG with our suite room. They eventually gave us a smoking room which was stinking of booze and smoke. Infuriated my wife asked for the hotel manager and the receptionist refused to connect us to the manager. I called up the ,www.hotels.com, website call center and they said they are also helpless!!

If u are booking a non smoking room with hotels.com dont be sure whether u ll get one !!
