Finding a good, reasonably priced hotel for 2 adults and 2 children in Mumbai is no easy task especially when hotels count one of the child as an adult. Attempting to book rooms directly leads to unavailability or a suggestion that we get two rooms. Hotel search engines are the same and when we the kids ages, throws up hotels near the airport and they are not cheap either.
I have family members who have used this hotel in the past and they recommended that I get a suite. As mentioned trying to book this hotel online was a non starter, so I rang the hotel manager up directly, told him it was for a party of 4 and got a suite for a discounted rate of 7000 rupees per night. As we only needed the room for part of the time the next day as we had a night flight, we got a day rate for the second day for 3500 rupees and were allowed to check out at 8:00 pm.
All the prices, check in dates and the number of people and the ages of our party were confirmed with the manager by email so we all knew where we stood and there would be no surprises during check in.
Check in at the hotel was easy although I was a bit taken aback when they took out a giant ledger to enter guest details, surely it would be all computerised these days.
They have small lifts in the building and not helped that one space is taken up by the lift attendant which is probably unnecessary. Our suite had a large double bed, a sofa that converted to a double bed for the kids, a couple of small sofas to sit on and a large fridge. The hotel provided us with 2 large bottle of complimentary water and they provide you with complimentary wifi, just ask at reception for a log in card.
This is a 3 star property in Coloba. The reason we got a suite so that we can get the best rooms the hotel has to offer. The furniture and deco may be a bit rough and ready, the reception area is small and busy. There is nothing fancy in the rooms and the bathroom, the views from the room is not much although you can get better views of Mumbai when you go to the rooftop restaurant.
The location is the best selling point. Just a few minutes walk away if the Gate of India, the Taj hotel. We could walk to cafes, restaurants, shops, there was even a McDonalds and Subway sandwich shop not too far away.
The manager arranged a driver and small car for us the next day to show us the sights of Mumbai for a discounted price of 800 rupees. He also arranged a jeep car for the airport later in the evening as we had rather a lot of luggage to take with us. Although I feel that I should had negotiated a bit more on the price for the jeep, if you looking for a smaller car just barter with the cab drivers outside the hotel.
The hotel lets itself down at breakfast. Its clear cost cutting has taken place here. We did notice from our trip in India, the quality of breakfast went down with each new hotel that we checked in to and it did reach its nadir here. There is a rather small and basic selection. The dining area was not much to shout about, its basic toast and tea/coffee, although there was fried egg and cold french fries on offer. If you want something more, there are cafes nearby, I think I already mentioned McDonalds is nearby.
The Ascot hotel, much lauded on Tripadvisor reviews in only 40 metres away and although its has a more fancy reception area the Godwin is real contender for value for money accommodation.
Overall this hotel is high up there on the value for money factor. The staff were friendly and attentive, the hotel may be a bit frazzled, getting on a bit, but for a short stay, highly recommended.
