I just had a horrifying experience with Hotel Marine Plaza. Thank God I didn’t check into this den. I had requested for a booking through email in August 2010 for a planned stay during September and since my stay was going to be for two weeks, asked the hotel if they could offer me MAP. The hotel first agreed, but when they sent me a confirmation mail, it said only breakfast would be offered. I wrote back asking about MAP. Marine Plaza never replied. So, I went ahead and booked another hotel. Now I am shocked to get a telephone call from a lady named “Ida” threatening to charge me one night’s tariff as retention fee. But the worst part was the way she talked. I never had an experience with Mumbai’s underworld, but how different could they sound while making extortion calls? First these people go back on their promise when they have trapped a customer, then they do not reply to emails, and lastly make threatening calls using underworld tone. I wish I had the time to lodge a police complaint against this so-called five star hotel.

Had a family package with Breakfast, Dinner, Pastry Tray and Two Bottled Waters. Stayed for four nights with wife and kids.

Pros:
1. Great Location
Right in South Bombay surrounded by all important locations

2. Fantastic Views
On the Waters edge at Marine Drive.

3. Good Breakfast Menu.
Lots of Variety and good Ala-Carte menu.

4. Polite Room Service Staff
5. Good Reservation Team.
Our booking from USA was handled very professionally.

Cons:
There are very many to write about. Not a good sign for a 5 star rated hotel which charges top dollar rates like in USA. If they want to grow like US Chains like Hilton and Mariott they need lots of changes to implement.

1. Lackadaisical and Unprofessional Front Desk
Very rude behavior showing disrespect to the customer. We were forced to follow-up on every thing we requested for on a daily basis. Cannot even organize keeping two water bottles in the room as per the booked package. We finally could not bear it and complained to the management through the final survey. Have received email from Hotel manager promising to take corrective actions.

3. Unmaintained Pool
The roof top pool which is their big selling point needs people to maintain rain or shine. Any time we went their there was no hotel staff around the pool and pool was littered with bird dropping and regurgitated crow food.

4. Dinner Menu
The Dinner menu had variety but as told by one other reviewer definitely needs class for a five start joint. The food was very mediocre and bland. Much work needs to be done on the taste side.

5. The Hotel restaurant
Spectacular views while you dine, be it break fast or dinner, but the space is so small and very crowded for a five start restaurant standard. You will be hard pressed to have quiet business conversations and forget about secluded romantic dinner.

6. Concierge Service
We went to the front desk and asked for some help on the directions for some of the places we wanted to visit. The Front desk person told we need to talk to the concierge, this is the standard reply you will get in the front desk for any of your queries related to travel in Mumbai, so visitors to the hotel should be prepared to walk to the concierge desk which was always crowded with travelers needing help. Regarding the concierge service, I would give a worst rating for them. No directions they gave in the concierge desk were correct, I wonder whether they are really Mumbai locals in the desk. Beware of asking them to arrange your transportation needs. They get private taxis that they have shady dealings with who in turn fleece you. One time my wife went asked the concierge to get a blue taxi to go to Haji Ali mosque and they immediately got this private taxi and told her that the driver will charge her the same amount as the public taxi. Believing that we got on the vehicle and the driver took us to Haji Ali and demanded INR 500.00. My wife was shocked after some arguments we finally gave INR 250.00 and got down. After visiting the mosque we took a blue taxi back to hotel and to our chagrin we paid only INR 120.00. Other time they gave a completely wrong recommendation for a sweet shop which does'nt even sell the sweet we asked for. So my recommendation is visitors should basically avoid the hotel's concierge service as much as possible.

5 Wireless
For internet browsing be ready to cough uo 4000% more for internet browsing than the street rates, plus for the rates they charge we should get free wifi like other competitors.

For the best views, request for west-facing rooms. Unlimited views over Mumbai's Marine Drive with sunset views over the Arabian sea. Rooms are traditional, clean, and equipped with modern conveniences but no wi-fi so one has to sit at the desk and connect the laptop to the LAN cable. Fitness centre is underwhelmingly small but the pool at the top has great views and unique with its glass bottom above the lobby's atrium.

The view was the best part of this hotel. The rooms looked out to the Queen's Necklace. They were spacious and I liked the walk in closet a lot.

Marine Plaza is somewhat expensive. But it is right on the Marine Drive. So, it was pleasant to go for a walk on the beach by the 'Diamond Necklace' of the Mumbai Bay, with its surf, interesting rocks, sidewalk vendors, and many morning walkers. Then there was a fantastic breakfast with a buffet of purees, many vegetables, dosas, omelettes to orser, etc. Then, there was a large basket in the room, each afternoon, which contained many fruits, small sandwiches, and cookies. There was no need to spend extra money on lunch or dinner, unless I was meeting a friend for a meal. In the evening, when I invited some friends to Marine Plaza, we had not only great food, we were entertained by a musician playing a harmonium-type instrument, and we had a great time and laughed so hard, others must have thought we were all crazy.
