Our month-long trip through India was coming to an end. Mumbai was our last stop before heading back to the cold lowlands. When we were looking for a hotel in Mumbai, our choices were limited with our preferences (comfort for a comfortable price, something that is hard to find in expensive Mumbai). Out of all options, the Residency became our choice.
When arriving at the hotel, we were a bit sceptical, mainly due to just a small portion of negative reviews on Tripadvisor, especially the one about the roaches. We proved to be wrong with our scepticism!
First of all; location. The location is pretty much perfect. Located only 10 minutes away from CST/Victoria train station. Churchgate station and the famous Marine Drive are 20 minutes away from the hotel. Fancy a bit of Gateway of India and Taj Hotel? Only 20 minutes away. All walking distances!
The staff. All staff members gave us a very welcoming feeling during our stay. A smile and a personal touch always make the difference, the people at the Residency are very much aware of this!
The rooms: after inspecting a couple of rooms in the main building and the satellite building, we decided to take a room in the satellite building for the sake of complimentary wi-fi and breakfast. The price difference between a stay in the main building without these extras and a stay in the satellite building is not that big. Our room and the other inspected rooms are small but very clean and well maintained. Be aware that renovation works are still going on in the main building. A lot of rooms in the main building are already renovated to modern standards, but a small amount of rooms still appear to be a bit old and dingy. It is unknown when they are finished with the whole main building. Ask the reception desk guys for the actual situation when you arrive!
If breakfast is included in your rate: don't expect a feast. But with cereal, muffins, toasts, tea, coffee, fruit juices and excellent fried/scrambled eggs, the breakfast service provides a decent amount of energy for the day! Room service is also available throughout the day.
One word of advice: If you leave your room for the day, ask housekeeping to spray some anti-bug repellent into the toilet and shower drain. A cockroach tried to enter our room through the drain next to the toilet (the one that captures the water from the bidet shower). Ask this on a daily basis and no dirty insect will be able to enter your room.
If you happen to check out in the morning with a late departure from the airport or a train station, hotel staff is happy to provide a room for a short time if you need a quick shower before heading to your plane/train. Ofcourse it depends on the room availability, but you can always ask for it. Nothing extra will be charged! Ofcourse, luggage storage is available as well.
Mumbai is a great but expensive city. If you need a reasonably hotel in one of the more bustling parts of the city, the Regency provides great service and clean rooms for a price that is more than reasonable by Mumbai standards. Highly recommended!
Rooms in the nearby satellite building come with complimentary wi-fi and breakfast. The price differ...
