I am not a food critic and I don’t even like to share criticism publicly. But after my experience at Cafe Zoe, I was forced to write a review.
Before going to the restaurant we called and tried to make reservations, but an “extremely rude” person on the phone was quite rigid about maintaining their two seatings a night reservation policy i.e. reservations are available for either 20:30 or 22:30. We then decided to try our luck by going to the restaurant as advised to us on the phone.
We maneuvered our way through the narrow lanes and reached the restaurant. We entered and met Ivan, who I believe is the manager, and was responsible for taking reservations.
We put our name in the waiting list, and were curtly told by the manager that we should wait by the bar and he’ll let us know in an HOUR if they can accommodate us or not. We were taken aback by such arrogant behavior. I do not think they need an hour to figure out if they can give us a table or not.
While waiting we notice that treating their customers like this is just normal for them. Seeing so many people on the waiting list, and people having reservations coming in an hour late, this reservation policy for a weekday clearly seemed implausible.
While we were waiting at the bar, Ivan had our table ready in precisely 10minutes. As we walked upstairs, we see a couple of tables unoccupied. This made it even more difficult for us to understand such inflexible attitude.
Once seated our server, Beno, did not attend to us (for 15minutes) until called for. There is a long wait for everything, right from getting the menu to getting someone to take your order to clearing the plates. The only thing we did not have to wait for was the cheque.
The only conversation we had that night was how bad the service was.
To be fair, the food was excellent. But poor service did leave a bad taste in our mouth.
It disappoints me that a restaurant with so much scope in terms of its concept, ambience and food is purely being let down by its service and the manager(Ivan).
I feel that the management at Cafe Zoe needs a reminder that restaurants sell as packages and can’t survive on food or decor alone. Service is what makes loyal customers.
Owing to our disappointing dining experience that night, I do not intend to go there again. And I’ll not even recommend it to anyone who wants to enjoy eating out and consider that “Service” can make or break a restaurant.
Cafe Zoe is an experience I would not want to experience again. Mumbai restaurants have much more to offer than settle for such a compromise.
