Ram Ashray is one of those classic Udipi restaurants in Mumbai where one can get the real flavor of South Indian food. Whether it is the filter coffee or the melt-in-the-mouth idlis or the variety of dosas - each is a class apart. Not to forget the fact that it is completely value for money.
They start early at 5am and the shutters are down by 9.30pm sharp. Though the place is perpetually crowded during the day, over the years I’ve realized that the best time to visit is early morning when they open (of course, at that time they serve only Idli and maybe dosa if you are lucky) and also late afternoon i.e. post 3.30-4pm but before dinner time. Look out for the special items of the day which are hand written on a board there and make sure to reach there on time to avoid disappointment!
I’ve been regularly coming here since many years now and never have I had anything at Ramashraya which has not been up to the mark. They offer amazing variations in Sheera everyday – Pineapple, Chocolate, Strawberry, Roasted Almond ….Wow!!! The Neer dosa is served with sambar and 2 chutneys. The Bisi bele Bhaat and curd rice are awesome as well. The Rawa Dosas are crisp and Uttappas are cooked to perfection. This place easily offers the softest Idlis in Mumbai…Not to be missed at any cost.
