I never thought that we have such a wonderful place so close to Mumbai Suburbs. The Kanheri Caves are located near Borivali, Mumbai, India. Deep within the green forests of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, the caves are 6 km from the main gate & 7 km from Borivali Station. You can either take your vehicle or you can hire jeeps to reach the caves from the main gate of Sanjay Gandhi National Park. I visited there with my family. Nice and quiet place to relax. But, be aware of naughty monkeys!
Most of the caves are used as the Buddhist vihars, meant for living, studying, and meditating. You can fancy your chances to see some waterfalls in Kanheri caves while visiting there in the rainy season. This can be nice picnic spot - you can enjoy a day out with your family away from hassles of Mumbai city life. The road from the entry point of Sanjay Gandhi National Park to Kanheri caves is bisected by streams where families can enjoy lazy weekend gatherings. There are also arrangements for boating and tiger/lion safari inside. Enjoy!
