This is a wonderful neighborhood near many former British Parliment Buildings and superb restaurants. Just two blocks from the ferry to Elephanta Island and the Taj Hotel. Good, clean rooms, older, high ceilings and somewhat tired elegance, it was an excellent bargain. Would definitely stay there again.

Great location. Friendly staff. Nice room for being in India, although in our bathroom the sink in the shower wasn't working well. Quiet, good sleep. Lots of (mostly Indian and arabic) tv channels. WiFi worked in reception but not in the room (as promised).

Whether it's good value for money I can't decide. Don't know enough about room prices in general in Mumbai. Me and my friend paid around 100 $ per night for a double room and were happy.

Very clean. Nicely made beds. Very attentvie staff. Very good breakfast. Good location. Apart from maybe being slightly overpirced i can't fault it really. Shame that they don;t offer their own taxi service or some other services but overall i thought this place was pretty good.

Albeit the most expensive hotel on my tour of India, the staff at Apollo were so friendly, flexible, and accommodating. They helped me plan my visits to local cinemas and cricket matches, and even helped us refresh after day of check-out before heading on to the airport. The rooms and corridors are quite cramped but they are modern and clean. The wireless internet was not working on my floor (3rd) during visit but did work well in reception. The breakfast was good.

For 76 € a night, I found a double room where all was dirty: sheets, walls and ceiling (with a evident mark of humidity). It looks like its not been cleaned for years. There is not air conditioning on the aisles, only in the lobby and inside the room. The bathroom, disgusting like the room, is so tiny that you can't not move. I couldn't sleep all night due to the noise of the he a/c from others rooms and the noise from the street. The location is the only positive note.

Stayed at Hotel Apollo for two nights, fooled by the decent looking photos on its website.

There is absolutely no praises worthy of mention of this hotel, except the location.

Situated behind the iconic Taj Mahal Palace hotel, the Gateway of India is a 5 minutes walk away. The Regal Theater, The Prince of Wales Museum (now Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya), Museum of Modern Arts, University of Mumbai, Jehengir Art Gallery, Police Headquarters are some of the historic monuments in its vicinity that are worthy of visit. The surrounding is filled with archaic architectures and touring around can be done walking.

As for the hotel, it is a typical budget hotel that won't surprise you much nor disappoint a lot. Its room is okay, and is moderately sized (avoid the single occupancy rooms right next to the elevator. It is the smallest.)

The bathroom will remind you of airplane toilets. It is so small that opening the door fully and getting inside would be of a challenge.

The service isn't good at all. The staffs aren't dedicated at all, except during the times when they linger around the door in an obvious expectation of a tip. The front desk staffs (and I assume one of them is the hotel owner) have a strict no-smile policy on their face. They aren't rude, but seems bossy and are never kind either.

On the plus side, wi-fi Internet free of charge was a pleasant surprise.

The ineffective air conditioning and the staff who aren't bothered and the scorching Mumbai climate can really make the stay a pain in the bottom, but there's a workaround. Leave the AC switched on, in a 'Power' mode while heading out for the day. The electric keyholder is just a show, so taking the key out doesn't put off the room electricity. The room should be cool by the time you return. Either save the environment and have a sweaty night with the dusty ceiling fan spinning around over your head, or be selfish and try to get what you pay for.

The in-room dining isn't great, its menu is limited and there are plenty of dining options around. The complementary breakfast buffet is worse than the food bank distribution for the homeless, and the offering of five items to choose from questions the definition of the vocabulary "buffet".

The same restaurant doubles as a club/ disco bar in the nighttime and goes on booming the woofers over the midnight, so either go shake your booty and enjoy there, or avoid the lower floor rooms.

Paying over 5,000INR per night for this hotel makes me tear blood from my eyes, but there aren't a lot of alternatives out there in that location. The distinguishable margin difference between the high-end luxury hotels with superb infrastructure but a sky-high pricing, or budget hotels that overcharge for their inferior service, really makes choosing of a good hotel extremely difficult.

Central Mumbai, Colaba, near the Gateway of India is a place where no value can be found among the hotels. Be it budget hotels or luxury 5 stars, all the accommodation options are overcharged for the value provided.

Room Tip: Avoid lower floor rooms. The room numbers ending with -10 are larger and have a better view of the...
