We went on Saturday night to see the Palace lit up at night. Definitely beautiful and impressive. Something that people would go see even in America. The lights shut off 15 minutes early, so make sure you aren't late. I had lots of fun doing photography with the lit up palace. It was pretty crowded but people and the hawkers weren't too pushy.
Monday morning we went to take the tour. Indians pays 40 rupees but foreigners pay 200 rupees. The tour was pretty disappointing. We were in a bit of a rush to get back to Bangalore so we didn't get a guide, would like to go back and get a guide or use the audio guide. Without a guide there is very little information displayed. They could improve this a lot. Definitely felt like cattle being herded through the palace. They make you take your shoes off (at least they check them for free), but then you are forced to walk through the palace and around the grounds barefoot. At the Taj Mahal they at least give you covers for your feet/shoes. At the Mysore Palace they give camel and elephant rides, so you have to walk barefoot on sidewalks covered in elephant and camel poop. Pretty disgusting. You can't take a camera inside which is lame and you can tell the upkeep isn't that great. You can even notice the wear and tear of the visitor masses touching everything and not obeying the rules.
Like I said, it has lots of potential, but it was kind of a let down.
