“Nice place, worth visiting”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 4, 2013

Nice and calm place. Once you enter into the place, you will be in a different world. This place is maintained well and instruction written both in Kannada and English. Spend some time in the temple and read the information. Good place for doing meditation. First time I saw monks with gadgets, not at all bad.
Beside the monastery, there is a good Malaya restaurant and not all expensive. If you like Chinese then this is the place. Schezwan noodle is worth trying.

Note: - One thing you have to remember is that, this is a religious place and not an amusement park. So read the instruction before creating mess.

“Good paintings”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 24, 2013

This is actually a Tibetian monastery, with a Buddha temple. There is a Tibetian settlement nearby - when a lot of tibetians fled from Tibed fearing Chinese invasion and hence, a monastery. I have been to many Buddhist monasteries (Nepal, Sikkim, Ladakh) and this is not very different from many of them. Of course, this is built on a flat land unlike the others which are usually on mountains !!

Inside the temple you'd find the statue of Buddha (peaceful, meditation form), that of Padmasambhava (a little fierce form) and also another statue. Usually when in a monastery, you are asked to keep silence, but somehow, in this place, tourists were chatting away happily.

One thing you should not miss is the innumerable buddhist paintings on the walls - they are very colorful and apart from that, if you have an eye for detail, you'd really appreciate it.

There is also a small model of the monastery in Tibet, which is also a nice thing to view.

If you are here during the prayer time, you can listen to the chanting by the monks, which in itself is a spectacular thing to hear and watch.

Since this is on the way to Madikeri, you can stop by for a few hours. There are a plenty of places to shop here for souvenirs and other Tibetian artecrafts.

“Spectacular monastery”

One of the largest monasteries outside of Tibet carved out of the jungle. This is very inspiring, beautiful to see.
