4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 4, 2013 via mobile

This old heritage property is by far the best in Shimla in its category...and if someone has doubts he can try the others in the vicinity( what I did). It certainly lacks the modern amenities and the options to dine but then if one is in Shimla for that then you are at a wrong place...the place offers enough to get lost in the beauty of the hill station with feeling of a palace with a huge area to stretch yourself..by far the best for what they charge...and if still need a better experience with a similar set up then go to Oberoi Woldflower for 4 to 5 times the price...stayed a lot of times here recently in the last week of march..

We stayed in Woodville Palace Hotel last year in October in the Imperial room. The hotel has beautiful lush gardens and gorgeous surroundings. The check in at the hotel was really quick. The staff at the palace was extremely helpful. Also the hotel has great location. The hotel is located a kilometer by walk to the Mall road. We really enjoyed the food at the Garden Restaurant. We had an ample variety to choose from the menu. You must try the Bread and Butter pudding at the dining hall. Overall a great experience at a heritage property.

Woodville palace may not be the fancy resort that some hotels are, but it offers the old world charm. When we went there seemed to be no other guests and we were greeted by an elderly man who showed us to our room and then disappeared, only to suddenly re-appear whenever we needed something. The hotel could be a setting for a film, it overlooks the large open vistas of Simla and is a short walk from town and from the famous temples above the town. There are monkeys around and it is a great estate. Most of the place looks like not much has changed since the 19th century, which is charming, but it also means a lot of things seem so historic you worry they might break if you touch them. Rooms are nice but slightly cold. Probably best not to be there in the colder months. This is a truly special place, not for those who want the modern trappings of technology, ideal for those who want to get away from it all and enjoy the old world.

Room Tip: Bring a blanket if it is cold out

The rating is purely for the location which was stunning. We loved Shimla however.....
We were booked for 3 nights and after just seeing the room and feeling the temperature ie NO heating, well other than an electric bar heater, decided to upgrade to another hotel. We compromised when moved to a smaller room which was a little warmer and didn't smell damp and were given 2 hot water bottles. My husband got all the hot water in the morning so no shower or desperately needed hair wash for me! The breakfast was a joke, rows of empty serving dishes and juice served straight from the cartons. One hair dryer in the whole hotel (which I ended up not needing due to lack of hot water!)
Suffice it to say we checked out and spent our last 2 nights in the wonderful Oberoi Cecil which was the best hotel ever.

Room Tip: Forget it!

Dear Mrs. Claire,

Thank you for your objective feedback. Please accept our apologies for your experience. It is our endeavor to live up to our customers’ expectations. As we are a heritage property, we currently do not have central heating but are in the process of acquiring the same. With regards to your complaints on food & auxiliary facilities we would look to ensuring this is not repeated.
We do hope that once our renovations are completed you would give us an opportunity to extend our hospitality again.
Kind regards
Divraj

Never ever go there in January. We arrived after 18 inches of snow had fallen. There is no heating in the rooms apart from an electric fire. Diners were eating wearing overcoats. The staff had no idea how to serve a meal or look after their guests although the offer of hot water bottles was well intentioned. Made Fawlty Towers look good. Internet access was down. The plumbing in the bathroom was quite frankly dangerous. Wires coming from hot water tanks and scalding steam coming from the taps. The hotel boasts about is 1930's feel but nothing has been done to it since and it is frankly archaic. Would give a minus rating if I could.
Loved Shimla though which we thought was an amazing place and the people were very friendly.

Had a wonderful stay at Woodville during Christmas 2012. Went with my wife and two kids.
They had organized a nice barbeque in the lawns with an Archery contest - was great fun.
While it is a 15-20 minute walk away from the mall - one doesn't mind the walk as it is mostly flat (no major climb). Even my kids enjoyed the walks from the Hotel to the mall and back.
The staff is very warm and the food is decent.

Room Tip: Its definitely more fun staying in the Palace Wing rather than the Heritage Wing.
