“Great Hollywood Bar.Very good and royal treatment to guests”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 3, 2012

I went to Himachal Pradesh for my professional photo shoots this april. Me and my team had a stay in the Woodville Palace Hotel in Shimla. Our Team had done the bookings from ShimlaRoyals.com.They are famous for giving good deals on Shimla stay and sightseeing stuff.Customising our requirements , Woodville was suggested and we okayed their proposal of a stay here.

A special attraction of the palace is “The Hollywood Bar 1930s” which has a galaxy of signed photographs of film stars like Clark Gable, Laurel and Hardy, Katherine Hepburn etc. Furthermore, the palace has a Tiger Lounge with a collection of photographs signed by Indian and European royalty. Another feature is the garden restaurant inaugurated by superstar Amitabh Bachchan. The palace has multi level rose gardens and plush green lawns. It is a gateway to other exquisite hill stations of Kufri and Chail.

Guests of the Woodville Palace Hotel Shimla found that some attractions were nearby and would only take a short time to reach. To reach areas that are further from the hotel, guests used a rental car or public transportation. The Woodville Palace Hotel Shimla offered 31 rooms for guests, including royal suites and cottages.

All of the rooms at the hotel had air conditioning and modern furnishings. The rooms included phones, TVs with satellite channels, and hot and cold running water. Those who stayed at the Woodville Palace Hotel Shimla were able to dine at the inhouse restaurant. The eatery served a wide range of cuisine, and guests were able to dine on Indian, continental, and regional fare. The hotel also offered car parking for those arrived by vehicle.

We were facilitated with various services. The Tiger Lounge, Green lawns, tennis, billiards, table tennis and badminton stuff made the stay enjoyable. For business purpose conference halls were present. Major credit cards were accepted. In all, we got a relaxed and comfortable sevice by this hotel & Anandi from Shimlaroyals which helped us to accomplish our job nicely.

Looks very impressive from the outside as you approach the hotel but inside I would describe as faded grandeur.
Our room wasnt very clean and the rug looked shabby and dirty. The dining room was lacking in atmosphere. The staff were lovely however and nothing was too much trouble.
A fairly easy walk (about 20mins) to The Mall but I would have preferred to have stayed on The Mall itself so one could just walk straight out at ones leisure and have the hotel in easy reach.
Woodville was too far for me age 70 to do the walking. Had an excellent curry but English food (cutlets) were dry and unpalatable.
Woodville has the potential but needs a good makeover - it needs Alex Polizzi to sort it out.

We stayed at the Woodville as a group of 15, traveling from the US, and found Woodville to be an excellent property. The service was exceptional, the property is truly unique and its quite close to the Mall, yet distant enough from the crowds. The views from the grounds are spectacular! The rooms are large and the furnishings are well maintained, as should be expected for a property with a unique history.

I plan to return there when possible.

We checked in to the property at 3 PM and we were shown our room (208). We immediately took it as we were very tired. The room was very very small. Barely able to fit a double bed. Within that room we needed another bed for our son, who is 11.

Soon, we realized that our room was right above the parking lot were bunch of drivers were sitting and chatting...and they kept boisterously chatting till late at night (12 PM of so). We were woken up by sounds of cab drivers who started with their morning rituals. We could also hear people in next rooms and even downstairs. It was impossible to sleep.

Washroom: The bathroom shower was inoperable. One needed HULK to turn the taps. The Bath Tub was dirty and leaky. There was a massive geyser staring in your face. The shower curtain had fungus. The shower mirror was broken and was about to slide to the floor.

Next morning, the Hotel decided to undertake construction activity in the next room. The deafening sounds of hammers were overbearing. My wife went up to speak to the Manager-who never came to check the problem. After shift of duty and a few phone calls one guy came, by then it was too late. By then, I had spoken to the friend of mine who had recommended this property, who called the GM to get my room changed.

The alternate Room: We liked the room. It was 2 room suite. Very basic, old bed covers, doors with fungus, simple washroom- but quiet. We took it and stayed there for the next day.

Inside the hotel: The hotel was once home to the "Jubbal" king, whose family still lives on the first floor. The hotel is adorned with the pictures of Royal Families from all over the world, including their own. The carpet in the corridor on the first floor was so old that you would not even put in your servant's room.

This place "Palace" is located next to Governor's house and Chief Minister's house and has a typical Shimla-like charm. It takes 10-15 minutes walk to reach "The Mall". Mall offerers very good view of the city. It could be a nice place or a bad place depending on your room.

It is pretty overpriced for the kind of amenities available. For example, the hotel does not even provide bottled water in the room (but has tea/coffee maker). The packaged water available is some unbranded product with 250% mark up. Hence it is recommended you carry your own bottled water.

Food: First day we went for lunch/snacks at the garden restaurant, which offers a good surrounding and a good feel. Service was slow/poor but we liked the food. I got my finger stuck in the chair seat, which was not tied to the main frame of the chair. Man! It hurt like crazy!

We went for dinner at its only restaurant operated at night. The only choice given to us was that its a Buffet! By force we had to eat extremely oily and fatty punjabi food. It was not even presented well and looked like food from a lower middle class Indian wedding. People working there just bothered about chatting amongst themselves. The dimsums were dry. The sweet dish (chocolate roll) looked like a bull has run in to the china shop. I told the restaurant manager that food was bad and his reply was "everyone has appreciated the food, you have have eaten something before".

Waiters: There is a problem with the hotel that all staff keeps talking amongst themselves. Loudly- that too. You would not hear any guests talk, only damn waiters kept talking amongst themselves all the time!!

If you are willing to spend $120-150/night on a hotel, I suggest go out of this country!

What I liked about this hotel was that it had retained its old Shimla flavour and at the same time one doesn't miss out on the modern comforts. It is a perfect choice for a family. The room tariff could be a little less. The dining area is very cozy and food too is good. All types of cuisine is served. Again more Shimla food would have been appreciated.

This is a peceful place with nice dinning hall and showing the old time stories. There is a Loin gallary where you can found preserve head of tigers. You can get through their rich culture also.
Palace is very attractive, alot of film has been shooted here One is "BLACK" with Amitabh & Rani. Food is good but they have to improve lighting and plumbing. If there is less no of occupents then they not provide the buffet brekfast so you must be careful, as it takes some more time. Overall experiance is good staff is very good and humble.

Room Tip: Room on first floor with front side must be choose and have a nice look rooms on back side and groun...

This is in a peaceful, secluded location away from the chaos of the Mall Road, Scandal Point, the bazaars etc. The building is very attractive and the interiors could be described as faded grandeur, but they have made no effort to update the plumbing, wiring heating arrangements in decades, so you have heritage, with no mod-cons.

The service was superb and the food in the morning and evening was very good, though be warned that the hotel seems to cater a little to small scale package groups!

Room Tip: Room 101 was on the ground floor by the entrance and was massive, and very comfortable. The room did...
