“Ideal for budget and family travelers”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 28, 2013

We were lucky to find this place, behind some of the expensive hotels. I say lucky coz it was just about 5 mins walk to The Mall Road, had covered parking included (parking space is an issue and very difficult to find when it snows), offered room heater (at an additional cost of INR 200 per day) and was modestly priced for its clean interiors.

You will find all sorts of people in this hotel - families, groups, honeymooners. Don't worry about the dingy looking corridors, the place is nice and rooms of all sizes are available. We visited during peak winters and a modest room with clean toilets and wardrobe cost us INR 1000 a day. During summers expect tariff to be inflated by 50-100%.

Make sure you negotiate the room tariff before hand. You may have to give your car keys as the parking is cramped and its tough to maneuver a vehicle yourself.

Dont let mirrors and round king beds in the rooms scare you...even expensive hotels have the similar decor...some fetish of honeymooning crowd I guess.

Room service is fine. Be sure to mention your sugar content for tea, coffee as they tend to make it really sweet.
TV reception may not be very good due to hilly terrain and yes, no remotes in most rooms.

Room Tip: Make sure you see samples of the rooms of different tariffs. You may find that rooms costing INR 100...

I alongwith my husband had booked the hotel for 17th and 18th November 2012. The booking was made 2 months in advance with the main criteria being the location near the mall. Breakfast and dinner was included in the package. The issues we faced:-
1>The room was not ready. After around 10 mins we were asked to proceed for the room but the room was still being cleaned.
2> When we finally entered the room after 10 mins, the bed sheets were dirty, the buckets had not been washed.. the bathroom and toilets were not clean.
3> When the same was pointed out to staff, the staff including manger was rude and told us that it was our duty to check the cleanliness of the room before we take it and also that we were making a fuss and the room was in fact clean.
4>The taste of the food was not good.
5> The decor is jarring and irritates.
6> They provide small TVs and that too without remote.
7> The rooms are close together and so there is lot of noise

Room Tip: Please check the cleanliness of the room before settling in. The onus is on you for cleanliness and...

I along with my family stayed for 2 nights from 4th Jan to 6th Jan. Selection was based on having Car parking facility. Booked it few days in advance.
Rooms are okay considering the budget in which they offer. Staff was co-operative. especiallly Mr. Vikas (manager) is very helpful.
Highlight of the hotel is , it is having a lift & very prompt Room Service & spacious Parking.

We booked Gulmarg Regency for 2 nights during Christmas. As most of the hotels were sold off or were too expensive, we chose this hotel for our stay in Shimla.

The staffs were not very well informed. The parking area infront of the hotel and in the garage is a good option for those who want to take their own vehicle. The hotel's entrace is on a narrow lane. The floors are built downward from the reception floor and look like a maze. Plenty of rooms but not well ventillated. Some rooms (the lower categories) do not have windows! The hotel has an elevator and that comes as a blessing as the stairs are too steep for a comfortable climb. There is no restuarant inside the hotel but it does have a good room service option. There are a few restaurants nearby on the Mall Road, if you want to dine out.

My Thumbs - Up goes to:

1. Location: At one end of the Mall road in a quite place. Approximately 10-15 minutes walk from the Ridge and shopping area.

2. Food: Room Service was prompt and food quality was good.

3. Elevator in the hotel

4. Room Tariff: Quite economical as it was super-peak season in Shimla.

5. Good insulation due to wooden walls and flooring kept the room warm on the very cold nights.

My Thumbs-Down goes to:

1. Rooms: Not well-maintained and the bathroom always had a bad stink. We had booked a super-deluxe room but the room area was very small, which made us feel a little claustrophobic initially. The bed linen, blankets and towels looked dirty and were smelly too. The bathroom was on the corridor side and so, we heard noises all through the day and night - running water, toilet flushing etc. This was truly uncomfortable and irritating.

2. Staff: Not very co-operative as they did not change our room when we wanted to upgrade. We were promised a higher category room the morning after our arrival, but no steps were taken later.

3. View from window: Only the rear of the building infront of us. Very little of the mountains was visible and the water tank and electric cables did not provide for an enjoyable sight. Moreover, there was always someone on the terrace of the building infront of the window and so, we had to keep the curtains closed for most of the day and night.

4. Room Decor: Strange - too many mirrors made us uncomfortable.

5. Hotel interiors: Looked murky as the corridors were dimly lit and did not look very clean.

6. Walk from the hotel: Uphill climb to the ridge and shopping area. So any one with heart conditions or breathing or walking problems should think twice before staying at this hotel.

I will perhaps not go back to this hotel again, if I have other options of staying in Shimla

Room Tip: Rooms on 4th Floor should be better. Super-deluxe and higher rooms are better than the others as mos...

Stayed there in August 2011, the room was more or less clean, but hotel doesnt look very well. Maybe some years ago it was better but not the time I was there. It is good for 1-2 nights. Actually the bed was round & there were mirrors everywhere nearby bed. I think the bedsheets were not clean.

Gulmarg Hotel is located 10 mins walking distance from the Shimla Railway Station. You can take a coolie to reach the hotel as the roads in Shimla are very stiff. The entrance to the hotel is on the 5th Floor. Rooms are good but little small. Also throughout the rooms mirrors are there which is uncomfortable at some times. Toilet,Rooms and other items were clean but not neat. Its a 10 min walking distance to the Mall. But service of food is superb, within 10 mins the food reaches at the room. Also there is a Travel desk below. Overall stay was good at the Hotel.
