“Nice hotel, good price, fab views but a little walk from town”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2011

We stayed in rooms on the top floor which are by far the nicest. When we arrived we first viewed the 3 bed apartment and then the rooms on the first floor but they were both a little tired and not so nice. The rooms that we stayed in on the top floor looked like they'ed been refurbished quite recently and were very clean. The beds were comfy and the showers were hot although the water pressure wasn't very good. The views from the rooms are fantastic.

We paid 1,000 rupees per room per night (we negotiated them down from 1,200 because we were booking 3 rooms for a few nights). This is very cheap fro Shimla and and excellent deal. The only slight negatives are the food, lack of wi-fi and the walk in to town. We only ate breakfast at the hotel and it was pretty poor. The walk to town is about 25 mins. Tip - there's no pavement on most of the main road going to town and the road is busy, however if you walk a couple of minutes along the main road there is a footpath on your right which takes you to the train station and then you can join the main road again where a pavement begins. It's no longer than walking along the main road in to town, but it is a lot safer because you're away from all the traffic.

Hard beds but comfy enough, clean, good en-suite bathroom, tv and wi-fi in room. Good, cheap food brought to your room. It is quite a walk from the centre of town and bus station (20-30 steep climb on busy road), good price for Shimla.

Room Tip: Good views from rooms at the back of hotel

Helpful staff. Quiet location. Decent value for money.

Room very cold in January and one bar fire at an extra Rs150/night barely helped.
Warm bedding though.
Lack of restaurant and lounge meant that there was no socialising to be had.

In truth I wish I'd paid a bit more for a better hotel nearer the centre of town.

Shimla is Himachal pradesh capital. This city always used to attract me because of Toy train it runs. Its wonderful ride with toy train Shimla-Kalka 96 km distance.

We reached Shimla via Kasauli by Taxi. The hotel is on highway only. A typical himachal hotel, one side on road and other side in valley ! Their reception is on 2nd floor which is on road !

View from hotel is excellent. This hotel is before actual city starts and the city is like necklace (circular hills). Hence from window also we could see extreme side of Shimla. Very spectacular view from hotel top. Also there were pine trees popping in our room windows. But you can see only tree top ! You have to walk down the road to see tree base.

Rooms are warm and clean. But room maintenance to be looked for. Also one more interesting about TV, here you can watch local cable with himachali actors and dances which I watched first time. Also room service was ok. Food here is very nice. Here also we got Phulakes to enjoy.

Walk down the road, either on highway or downside local roads, is very pleasant. Me and my kid walked down to railway station which is closer, we enjoyed watching toy train with whistle and slow speed reaching Shimla. That train ride we enjoyed ex-Shimla.

In short this is good budget hotel to stay with family and bit away from main market and mall road where heavy rush may be found during peak season. So for silent stay this is good hotel.

My wife and I had been living in East Africa for 3 years and were slowly making our way back to the States. We went to India for 4 weeks with no prearranged plans. We had already been in India for 2 weeks when we arrived in Shimla and had stayed in rooms ranging from 500 to 2000 rupees per double. This hotel, from 600 to 700 rupees for a normal double depending on how you book it, was our favorite and, we thought, the best value.

I read two reviews before staying there, one very negative. Yes, the website says "Deluxe Double Bed Room" or "Super Deluxe" but if you're expecting that paying only 600 to 1200 rupees (about $12 to $24) then you may need a lesson in economics or exchange rates. Also, the receptionists pretty much work there without a break as far as we could tell and may be sleeping when you call on them but they never hestitated to wake up and address any issue we had.

What do you get? We stayed in the cheapest room and got a very large bed, extra sheets, an eating table and two chairs, hot water, a large wardrobe, a large mirror, a TV with lots of English language programming, a great view, and access to a very good, cheap food that was brought to our door. Another thing we liked was the staff never hung around expecting a tip which we experienced a lot prior to our stay here. We were told if you think a tip is deserved you leave it in the room when you leave for good as is the custom in India and the staff respected that.

One concern may be that the hotel is far from the Mall (main shopping area; a twenty minute walk up and downhill) but for my wife and I this was a good excuse for exercise. Just make sure you get off the main road (highway 22) up the first set of steps that you can. Another possible concern is that the beds are a little hard when compared to American and European hotels. However, even the 2000 rupee doubles we stayed in were like this; you may have to pay closer to American or European rates to get a spring mattress.

My wife and I stayed there twice for a total of 6 days and really liked the hotel and town. Hope you do, too.

We had a marvelous stay in Shimla at the Hotel Firhill.

Nice interiors, good service and some excellent location too.

Very reasonably priced menu; Freshly prepared food.

The only limitation: distance from the Mall.

On return from manali we were accomidated in one of the worst hotels i have ever stayed in my life. We got substandard rooms and they were categorized as super delux rooms.

After a nights pathetic sleep in the so called super delux rooms it was the turn of a miserable morning. We planned to go for an outing at around 7 O clock in the morning and woke up at around 5 O Clock to take a bath. To our surprise a drop of water was not found in the taps. The receptionist was not available to take a complaint( later it was intimated to us that the reception and the room service starts only at 8 O clock in the morning - first time in my life i heard such a thing from a hotel).

Later we were shifted to some other rooms were we could take a bath.

Here i am rating the hotel as one because i could not get any figure below this.
