“Very good value for money”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2012

We stayed for one night in Spars Lodge. It is very basic but clean and comfortable. Yes the rooms, towels and bed linen are a little worn but if you consider the price and where it is located it is extremely good value for money!

The lounge area is a warm and inviting area to hang out. The staff were all pleasant and helpful. The hotel is on a steep hill so definitely not for the unfit.

Overall I think Spars lodge is in good location and great value for money.

Arriving after dark I was warmly greeted, seen to my comfortable room and to top it off, was prepared a most lovely meal!
The lodge staff are extremely friendly and helpful. A motorcycle, bus tickets, taxi were all arranged for me without any fuss.
The manager went out of his way to help me out.
A very charming lodge with wonderful views and an enjoyable walk to the Mall, without the need for taxis.
I stayed here twice, after touring around on a motorcycle I returned to the lodge for 2 more days and had a wonderful time. Food is excellent with a great choice from the menu.
What impressed me was the other guests were also delighted with their stay, making for a very happy place to be in.
The owner is a great guy, talking, enjoying tea, and most special...being taken for an afternoon stroll around the area which was amazing.
I will certainly come home to Spars Lodge again.

If you come to Spars Lodge expecting a super-nice, top modern hotel, you will be disappointed. But - if you are expecting a cozy place to sleep and eat good food for a low cost, you will have a good time here.

The view from the little restaurant/lobby area is great, and it is a good place to hang out in the evenings - easy to meet and talk to the other guests.

The rooms are ok, very basic, and so is the bathroom. It is clean, but old and "worn".

They save their water here, so you are not allowed to clean your clothes in your room - you will get a fine!

It is about 25-30 minutes walk to the start of "the Mall" road. The walk is nice (at least during summertime), don't know how it would be in snow however...

Room Tip: The higher up, the better view... avoid the lowest floor, you will end up looking at slumlike buildi...

Visiting end of April we found this guest house very quiet and we had a room with a partial view some tin roof some valley, and we were entertained by the monkeys. Some maintenance was going on but didn't bother us at all. Not for the unfit on quite a steep hill .Rooms were clean and we found the owner's and staff very friendly.Fantastic view from the resturant and the food was ok. Would stay there again if we found ourselves in Shimla, good location if you don't mind a short trek into town/Mall

The good - some rooms have nice views
The food is great, and the restaurant has an amazing view
The bad - some rooms have views of tin sheds and mouldy walls
some of the staff speak barely no english and hide when you ask a question, rather than fetch someone else
the showers come out the taps as a little dribble which you can't get under.
the rooms are a bit cold and damp
the shower water heater didn't work, even after they claimed to have fixed it

I liked that the guesthouse is a little trek away from the center of Simla. It is very quiet (unless the monkeys decide to have a little game on the roof - but that was entertainment in itself), and has lovely views from the dining area / reception.

Meals were a little expensive for what you get ... so I limited it to enjoying the views over breakfast.

Room Tip: The rooms just below reception has the best views.

We travelled through India for four months and rather than review the 70 or so places we stayed, we decided to only review the top five. We really enjoyed our time at Spar's Lodge. It was cosy and very relaxing, with wonderful views from the dining room.

The walk to town was beautiful, Shimla was one of the best places we went in India, we loved it. We stayed at Spar's Lodge for three days and decided to extend our visit, however due to our late decision our room had already been booked for someone else that night. The manager helped us to find somewhere else and arranged a taxi to take us there. We would have prefered to stay at Spar's, so book quickly if you decide to go!
