“a happy start and end to our India holiday”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 28, 2013

We stayed in Lutyens both at the beginning of our India trip around Rajasthan and at the end...and it was perfect. Shukla was warm and welcoming. We felt at home and at ease. Our suppers were wholesome and shared with other like-minded guests. The other members of staff were gracious and kind. Our rooms were simple but comfortable and they and the gardens were welcome oases after frantic, noisy Delhi. We walked to Lodi Gardens and Khan Market. Shukla was a gentle and helpful hostess and on a cold Delhi morning, she lit the fire-we sat around it, drinking our tea. We will definitely return should we revisit Delhi, which we hope we shall.

Room Tip: Perhaps a garden view...

This is the second time I have stayed in this tranquil bungalow in New Delhi. It is such a personable place, with the hostess Mrs. Shukla Nath making sure that everything is homely and welcoming, while the ample grounds provide enough space for quiet relaxation. After a long trip in India it is the perfect place to decompress, sitting out in the gardens while the parrots and squirrels jostle for a place at feeders hanging in the tree.

Lutyens Bungalow is a longstanding family business that has existed long before trip advisor and it still feels more like a word-of-mouth secret. We arrived back at our room on our first night out to dinner on fresh Winter evening and found that the staff had put hot water bottles in our beds. It's these touches, along with the excellent huge square shower head with piping hot solar powered water, that ensure a more than comfortable stay where old world ambience meets contemporary sustainability.

Our stay at Lutyen's Bungalow was very pleasant. The hostess - Mrs. Shukla Nath - is a delight to talk with over tea or coffee. The home is older but very charming. Our room was very clean and comfortable. The garden is a welcome retreat in the hustle and bustle of Delhi. Plus, it's walking distance to Lodi Gardens. The breakfast was really good. Probably the best that we had in India. The neighborhood seems very safe and it is easy to walk around. We later learned how much we appreciated the good sidewalks in that area! If you don't mind walking 15-25 minutes, there are a few restaurants fairly near. One in Lodi Gardens - expensive but good. Several other choices in the Khan Market area. There is a pool on the property - but it was too cold to use. Looks as though it would be very nice to use during the heat of summer.

They confirmed a room for Rs. 8,000 after a long email correspondence and a few phone calls; at the time of processing the payment, I discovered that the room had no windows. They seemed surprised that I would need one! Very Disappointing.

We really regret not being able to have Simone Giostra stay with us due to the jfollowing sequence of events. We confirmed a triple room for the 4th and 5th of Jan. as far back as the 8th of Dec. Once we confirm a booking it needs to be backed by credit card details from the guests as is the norm in the hotel industry.

On the 11th of December Simone asked us about the down payment and also said they needed more time to finalise their schedule. We still kept their booking until the 21st, and our office assistant sent a mail to them with a reminder to confirm their dates. On the 23rd, he sent us a mail saying he can confirm the dates only by the next day. Our office assistant unfortunately fell sick that day and I, Shukla, spoke to him on the phone. I had no idea about what happened in the past. In the meantime someone booked the superior room which was kept for them. This would not have happened if ther room was confirmed with a credit card no. in time.

Kindly note we did hold the room for them for over 2 weeks. But when we don't receive the credit card details, we are unabled to hold the booking beyond a certain period of time. We do hope you will understand. For us all our guests are important .

We do apologise to Simone for things not having worked out so well as we would have wanted.

Reviews that talk about the location, the oasis quality, the friendly hostess are all accurate. We stayed there 4 nights. Easy to get taxis and tuk-tuks to get around. Bed was comfortable. Room was fine. A solid alternative to expensive hotels.

Pluses: fun to stay in Lutyens Bungalow quarter; nice area with tree and shrubbery lined streets and sidewalks; pleasant and safe walk to Lodi Gardens (monuments and excellent restaurant); LB has peaceful garden with plenty of feeding cockatoos and squirrels; good and reasonably priced pick up from airport and to station.

Minuses: room spartanly furnished and not particularly clean; bath very badly stained and towels grey and threadbare; breakfast buffet offers only limited choice and meagre quantities (though eggs readily cooked to order).

Overall, disappointing given price and TripAdvisor ratings. This is a good location within Delhi for tourists but I would recommend considering other options in the area.

Thank you for your feedback. Though we do replace with fresh towels in the rooms every day, we do need to change the stock of our towels more frequently. We have changed our towels currently and we have made a note of the date on each towel, so we can keep track of when it needs to be changed. We are also making a greater effort to ensure cleanliness in the rooms. Disinfectents in the form of floor cleaners and detergents are being used to clean the bathrooms. We do offer unlimited quantities of breakfast, with as many toasts and eggs the guests may want to consume. Alongwith cereal, conflakes, muesli, tea, coffee, fruits, yogurt, stuffed paranthas etc. If by any chance we run out of something on the buffet table, our guests feel free to order some more. We do wish you give us the opportunity to stay with us again and we hope we can try and make your stay more comfortable.

If you've been traveling across India, you will find this bed and breakfast to be an oasis. It is nestled in the greenest part of South Delhi and the grounds are quiet and lovely. The hosts are friendly and often interact with guests (mostly foreign). It is a comfortable and reliable option for those who don't know Delhi or India very well. The rooms are basic, but comfortable. The bathrooms are very clean. They run a good business and charge more for it, but I will stay here again for the atmosphere alone.
