“landing in Delhi”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2013

After a 17 hour flight and the usual hair raising taxi drive to our hotel, it was wonderful to be greeted by a smiling doorman and staff, even at 5 am. The disadvantage is that the hotelis a long way out of the centre of Delhi, where most tourists would want to be. However, its not far from a Metro station, which can get you pretty much anywhere in Delhi, and is an inexpensive way to get arround.

Its the equivalent of about $40/night, which is certainly not the cheapest deal, but for what we got, its great value. Unlike even some of the better hotels in India, everything is clean and modern. Endless supplies of hot water 24 hour restuarant serving pretty much what you like, with numerous choices for thecomplimentary breakfast.

Even though its situated next to one of the busier roads in Delhi, our room was very quiet. We seemed to be one of the few guests staying here(end of September), but maybe less so in high season. Its got a rooftop space, which is a nice spot if you want to get away from your room.

The staff will arrange anything, from autos, plane tickets, money exchanger, and even SIM cards for our phone.Nearby neighbourhoods are leasfy and pleasant.Bed was big and unlike the usual matress to be found in other hotels, very comfortable.

Good points: Comfort, price, staff
Less good point: location

I stayed in low season, so the hotel was very quiet (it's a small place in any case). The ambiance is relaxed and informal. My room was comfortable, with a good firm bed, neat and unpretentious. The staff were eager to please, polite and helpful, happy to make arrangements on your behalf (even to the extent of an overnight trip to Agra, at a very good price); and when the inevitable couple of miscommunications arose, they were scrupulously and calmly sorted out. The rooftop terrace, though dusty and basic, gives an unexpectedly green view north towards the city.

The disadvantage of the hotel is the location. It is 30 hectic minutes into the city centre, and difficult for cabs and tuk-tuks to find on the return journey (tip: from the airport, make sure you hire a pre-paid cab, as it may take the driver 45 minutes of asking passers-by for help.) The hotel fronts on to a perpetually busy and dusty main road. There are in fact two local neighbourhoods one can walk around in. One (Sukhdev Vihar) is round the corner, away from the main road. The other (the Friends Colony, good for food) requires a hair-raising walk along the main road - only for those willing to negotiate broken pavement and dodge traffic. So one need not feel isolated. But for those wanting immediate access to Delhi's central attractions, the location will be a nuisance.

Basil is situated in South Delhi and is traffic jam free. The hotel looks modest. The room is not very big and the washroom small. The staff are friendly and courteous. Breakfast does not have variety. Our room was not made up even though we have informed the staff and have hanged sign on door. The bed is comfortable and wifi is clear. It was the most expensive hotel we have stayed in India but not the best one.

Stayed here with my family on the 7th August 2013, Having read all the great reviews I though it would be a good excperience. It first went askew when they demanded the passports of my nz citizen children, after explaining to them that this rule only applies to persons over 18 yrs old they called the police and the police/govt department confirmed to us by phone that the rule applies to persons over 18 and not minor children of 1/3/5 and 7 yrs such as ours when with parents. Next issue is that it took 3 requests to get the extra bed brought to the room and we refused to pay the extra charge when asked as we had already paid for it with the room booking via travel guru. Then was the food we ordered, poor quantity and fewer portions than advertised. eg: 'chicken sausage 8 pc rupees 180'. it was 2 chicken sausages each cut into 4 pcs to make 8 pcs. the black mould in the bathrooms was offputting as was the dirt between the grouting of this bathroom tiles and the smell coming from the drains of the bathroom. all of these things could be put aside perhaps if it was not for the final drama, we were running late for the flight back to NZ and when we went downstairs to pay the bill (food only) the credit card machine was not working. the receptionist told us to go and find an atm (at 5.15 am) and return with the money before we were permitted to leave. my husband told him to note the credit card number and process it when the machine was working later on. and what ensued was a 25 minute argument over the payment making us very late. I only managed to board the plane 5 mins from departure. I am very disturbed about the overall service of this place and would never consider saying again on my next trip to India.

The hotel has nice size and clean rooms, AC (very quiet) and hot water and the other facilities you would expect from from a nice hotel. The staff is very helpful and friendly. The food was nice (though the menu needs description). We have asked of we could eat on the roof terrace and it was organised for us. Can't flaw the hotel in any way. A tip: if a taxi is having difficultied finding the hotel, just ask them to ring the residency (make sure you have their phone no) or you can ask local people around and they'll point you in the right direction.

Room Tip: we stayed on the third floor, away from the road (have requested it when was booking the room).
