“Old Delhi is great”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 4, 2013

the rickshaw ride was the highlight of Delhi. This is what I expected Delhi to look and feel like. It was crazy, goats, cows, millions of people, the spice market, the wholesale markets, wedding street. It was my favorite part of Delhi!

“Amazing but overwhelming”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 2, 2013

If you want to experience Old Delhi shopping as a local this is a great market. It is absolutely huge, though, and if you venture far inside you will likely lose your sense of direction and feel lost. The streets turn into alleyways and continue to narrow is you get further inside. The shopping can feel overwhelming because there are so many stalls.

The market is sectioned by product--jewelry in one area, scarves in another, textiles in yet another--but all the sections runs into each other so the dividing lines are a bit of a blur. There are many wholesalers market and we got excellent prices on silk scarves & real pashmina--so good that we didn't even bother to ask for a lower price.

We also sampled the street food--something we'd always been told not to do--but it was so delicious and we didn't get sick. I'd suggest avoiding produce or anything prepared with water, however, just to be safe.

Don't miss the spice market within this market. It's quite amazing and the vendors will let you sample and even teach you about what the various spices, nuts and foods are used for.

One last note--we hired a local shopping guide to help us navigate this enormous market. Our experience would have been much less enjoyable without her. Use the rest room before you go and plan to hold it the rest of the day--facilities are a hard to find and primitive. Also, if you are traveling with young kids you may want to skip this one or try it via one of the bike taxi tours--it would be easy to lose a child plus it's so crowded, it wouldn't be enjoyable from a child's height perspective as they'd be trapped in a sea of back ends!

“Nothing Special”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2013

Only more dirty crowded markets -- just more dirty and poor here. Makes one a bit nervous to walk around -- but, probably safe in daytime, since so many people around (and most I am sure are honest).
