“Sliding down, unfortunately”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 17, 2013

I had given a thumbs up 3 years ago. But this place, still great in many ways, is sliding down. Dining is the worst casualty with both standard of food and service deteriorating. A subtle take-it-or-leave-it attitude, which leaves not a very pleasant feeling.
Many of the varandahs of the rooms have been blocked as they have become structurally unsafe. The sink in the toilet meed some simple makeover.
The place is still pretty clean, and no one can take the superb location away.

The location is great. It's very safe, in part because of the location and in part because of the imposing but friendly security guard. The food is decent in an institutional way, and the upkeep should be better but it does give you a chance to experience Indian urban middle-class life: the creaky elevator, the "geyser" hot water that gets turned on as you need it. It does cost way too much.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 22, 2013

I have stayed here over the past decade regularly while travelling to Delhi for CNS work. But this past trip for 5 nights pinched me more because the price has increased considerably with a double room costing nearly Rs 4000 (and a single Rs 3000). In this amount (about Rs 4700 all incl.) one can get a 4 star hotel such as Ibis in Gurgaon!

BUT YMCA IS GREAT. This is a very safe, comfortable, clean and neat place to stay, especially for those who are not familiar with Delhi. Location is very central and very close to Airport Metro express as well as Delhi Metro station (subway) is also very close (5-7 min walk - to Patel Chowk Metro station).

YMCA also includes breakfast and dinner - and restaurant and reception lobby is good. They also have a good business centre and travel desk.

What is not good here is that - in recent stays I have to ask for free-kit-of-toiletries - so please ask when you check in and make sure you get the entire kit and not just a small soap.

second, their room service has really gone sour. Repeatedly we had to request for water in our room, and room service staff - this is not convenient and with so much of tariff one does wonder why is the room service not pleasant and caring? The pillow and mattress both need attention if YMCA is charging so much of tariff.

I sincerely request YMCA to revise their tariff and bring it down to Rs 2000 for single, and Rs 3000 for double, at most. Request their house keeping staff to be polite, caring, responsive and honest in their responsibilities they attend to;

Room Tip: make sure TV is not in one corner inside cupboard - rather in front of the double bed!

Have been staying there frequently for two reasons - one proximity to Connaught place, safety aspect... Especially in New Delhi, coupled with MAP ( breakfast & Dinner - earlier good spread, now thinned out!). Do not expect star treatment, but neat rooms. Rs 3000 per day MAP for single AC room.

Room Tip: Ask for new Block rooms

The YMCA Tourist Hotel is not a place you come to for pampering or ambience. It has all you need for a few days in a big city - excellent location, close to Connaught Place and the General Post Office, bedrooms with ensuites, a lift to get you to them, a business centre with very good computers available at a modest charge, very comfortable lobby seating, excellent storage facilities for in between checkout and airport/train departure and a big dining room. It must be said that breakfast is extremely basic but some of the cooking is good. I really loved the vegetable cutlets. For patrons who are Christians, there is another special facility provided - a book and music shop, well stocked. Despite my grading of "Average", given what you are asked to pay, this is actually a great option for many.

Room Tip: Mention that you want a room without pigeons breeding right outside or monkeys visiting!!

Ok do not expect a lot from a YMCA and you will not be dissapointed. The YMCA in New Delhi has great location, good external ambience and good reception, Indian style. The staff are great and efficient. Its near the metro station. But beyond that this is a basic place fit for a back packer. No internet and the Business centre internet is too expensive for no good reason. Too many move channels and hadrly any news channel in English. Yes they try their best t give you a newspaper in the mornings. But this is certainly not a place for anyone on business, and I made a great mistake to stay here on a business trip...and paid the price. And at 450 Rupees, their meals are to expensive for what you get on the buffet....

Room Tip: Sorry, try 4th floor, it may offer some consolation and make up for the bad part!

If you're on a budget, this is a good place to stay in Delhi. As a solo woman traveller, I always aim to stay with a known quantity. YMCA is a brand that can be trusted. The facility is run-down and if it's your first trip to Delhi or India in general, it may be a shock when you first arrive.

Basic room with common bath was fine--bathroom was always available to me, so it was worth the savings. But, the shower was only cold water--I didn't bother asking about it, so it may have been that I missed the hot water switch.

Breakfast and dinner was included in the room rate--the food was basic, but decent--making this a very affordable place to stay and still feel safe and secure (compared to other budget options that may be a little shady).

There is an overwhelming number of staff, and lots of things going--groups and group meetings. You can also book tours here (and I recommend doing that, rather than through Delhi Tours on Connaught Circus). There is an ATM and a money changer as well. And, you can get tea served in your room.

You can walk to Connaught Circus from the hostel--and there are coffee shops, McDonalds, KFC, and Twenty-Four (equivalent of 7-11) right near the hostel on the circus. You can also walk through to the inner circle of Connaught Place where all the fancy shops are located.

There is no wifi, but there is an business centre with decent internet access for okay prices.

Room Tip: Common bath rooms are worth the savings--there are just a few rooms sharing the common bath, so it...
