“interesting smell”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 3, 2012

I stayed at the Taj on 2 occasions 8 days apart. The 1st time I stayed, the room and the entire floor smelled like mildew. The 2nd time there was no smell and I was on a different floor. The staff is VERY accomodating and helpful. The restaurant in the hotel ( I believe the name is Machan or something close to that) has a wonderful breakfast buffet that will make your taste buds explode!

Room Tip: Choose a room on a higher level floor. They are nicer looking.

The original parts of this large, iconic, colonial period hotel have been thoroughly modernised without losing their character. The pool area is lovely with attractive greenery. Service is very friendly but with occasional mishaps such as when we had to wait a good ten minutes to have a cocktail delivered. The location is very much old Bombay and there is easy access to the colonial buildings but also to the smells, broken pavements and occasional beggar in this part of town. There is a wide range of restaurants and we enjoyed some very good Indian dishes from the coffee shop but with a table in the pool area courtyard which has more character. Our room was in the Tower which is just a modern block. Rooms are of a modest size and beginning to show their age but are perfectly acceptable and there are some very good deals available. Our room had a lovely view of the Gate of India.

Nice hotel, well appointed and very secure. Located very centrally in New Delhi to all main tourist attractions. 10 mins easy walk to Khan Market. Although frequented by many on business do not let this put you off. Staff very friendly and helpful. Good variety of restaurants with excellent international and Indian food, nice relaxing pool area although one can hear the adjacent traffic. Rooms good size, have all you need - unlimited free water, tea making facilities, mini-bar etc. Would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing pool, where you have a fine view over part of Dehli.

I had to attend a seminar in Delhi and hence I checked in at this place as it was close to the location I had to go and I prefer Taj in India for their lovely service. The check in was fine with some confusion over the upgrade they promised and then retracted. Subsequently in an independent feedback they apologised and promised amendments next time. Room was decent with nice view and high rise as we had preferred. Room service was nice and food was lovely as you would expect with Taj. It has a signature Indian & a Chinese restaurants which are popular in Delhi and needless to mention they come with their price tags. The concierge was extremely helpful. Checkout was prompt and hassle free.

My family and I are regular visitors at this prestigiuos and prestigious and world famous hotel. The quality of service never ceases to amaze us, and certainly those that stay in Suites or Club Rooms are pampered extensively.
The hotel has excellent rooms, restuarants, and other 5 star facilities such as an excellent gym and steam room. You are spoilt for choice when it comes to dining and entertainment.

Above everything all i rate the staff adnd teh service

Room Tip: For those staying at the Club rooms or suites --- the private lounge offers you a quieter option for...

We were promptly met at the airport by the car from the hotel, which was very welcome. However, this service was also provided by our tour guide, and when they arranged this with the hotel, the hotel noted that against my name, but not that of my wife! Hence we had two pick-ups waiting!

Delhi was smothered in fog/smog when we arrived, so the drive from the airport to the hotel was almost in darkness (even though this was early afternoon), so we didn't really experience any sense of arrival at this rather grand, old hotel.

The entry lobby and general reception area were very welcoming and beautifully decorated. Reception, itself, was very informal, with staff sat at desks rather than being behind check-in desks. They immediately took us to our room to conduct the check-in formalities, rather than at the the lobby.

We had booked a club suite, and were surprised to be taken to only the 3rd floor, and into a room which was a smoking room. This was despite our bookings being specifically for non-smoking. After advising of my dis-satisfaction, they organised to have us moved to the non-smoking floor, but it would take an hour or so. They were happy for us to use the facilities of the existing room whilst we waited, after a long flight from Europe. The new room on the 9th floor was fine, but sadly did not provide any better view of the city due to the appalling smog cover.

The club lounge in the evening was welcoming and the staff very accommodating. The wine selection was limited, but satisfactory. Breakfast was served in the lounge, though we took ours in the main restaurant in the lobby, which provided a much wider selection.

We dined in the modern Indian restaurant, Varq, which was very nice, and offered a modern take on traditional indian cuisine. Whilst we are not regular eaters of indian cuisine, we thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience.

Overall, a very good business hotel, though as noted by previous reviewers, probably needs a bit of a brush-up in terms of modernity. They charge for internet usage which is irksome in a 5* hotel these days.

Rooms are sad and expensive (two times mi room was strongly smelling musty), Chinese restaurant is (very) expensive and insipid, the global ambiance gives a feeling of "old".

Compared to The Oberoi in Delhi, or the Crowne Plaza in Gurgaon we are not talking about the same level of service... but prices are still there !!

Room Tip: No advise to select a room: just select another hotel, at the same level of price, you can have bett...
