“Centrally located affordable luxury”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed yesterday NEW

Situated centrally, it's close to CP, the shopping hub of New Delhi. Rooms are neat with good ambience and facilities.
Good food with speciality restaurants. Service levels are excellent with a courteous staff. I love staying here for my business tours.

Stayed November 2014, traveled on business

Great hotel, gave it 5 stars had everything that opened & shut, weigh scales,TV audio in bathroom 2 x essentials oils with eye pack, turn down service, ticked all the boxes, quality bathroom essentials. Stayed 2 days, did not try restaurants, on the expensive side but affordable. Amazing breakfast Indian, international egg station, ++++++ loved it all.
If you turn left out of the hotel, 3 minute walk & was safe walking we found a pastry, bakery with lovely selection of food ,pizzas, soups, pastries, ice cream, chocolates, clean & friendly, couple guys with good English. Hotel had a lovely pool, did not use, in view of too many people.
Day 1 of our tour, all going really well, used Indian tour company Unisafe Tour company, thumbs up to Vishal.

A very welcoming hotel. Staff provide warm greetings upon arrival. The hotel service is wonderful and the breakfast spread is very good. Special mention goes to Mr Sameer Behl, the captain of Zing restaurant for providing warm, excellent , courteous service and for paying attention to detail.

Also special mention goes to chef Pathak and chef Mohan for preparing delicious and creative vegetarian food. Food served is of good quality.

Front desk managers Mr Anshul Gupta and Mr Saurabh provide attentive, courteous and excellent service.

Room Tip: Choose rooms facing the pool side and top floors as they are quieter.

Stayed for 2 nights and hosted a business event here. The room was a bit musty but the staff did their best to resolve it.

The chilli mint cocktail was to die for. You MUST try it.

The restaurant food was lovely and the front desk staff very accommodating.

This was our 2nd visit to The Metropolitan, we had booked another 3* hotel in Delhi but decided to relocate to The Metropolitan as the standard of service and quality of accommodation was much higher. The staff are always very helpful and the bar and restaurants give a choice of venues after a busy day. Also the Spa services are excellent.

Room Tip: Both rooms I have stayed in have been well located.

RESERVATIONS: yes

LOCALITY: The Metropolitan Hotel, New Delhi
Bangla, Sahib Road,
New Delhi - 110001
India

DIFICULTY LOCATING: easy

WELCOMING: good, enthusiastic

VIEW: city (26 May), city and mosque (30 May), and pool (9 & 10 June)

AMBIANCE: magnificent, but a little outdated and worn

PETS: No pets or even service animals are allowed

ROOM: The room was clean and the shower had plenty of hot water and a pulse head (26 May). Similar room on 30 May.

BED: king-size, comfortable

SERVICE: The service was helpful, quick, efficient, and friendly. We complained that the air-conditioning was not cool enough. They quickly sent a team of 3 with a very rickety ladder. They did something in the ceiling and the A/C worked better.

SAFE: About half the size of a normal room safe, but safety deposit boxes are available at the desk.

NOISE LEVEL: Noise from the street on the front and from pool parties on the back. However, we had no problems with either.

BAR: They advertised a well-stocked minibar in each room and a small bar in hotel. The “well-stocked” minibar only had 1 mini-bottle of scotch and 1 of vodka every day we were there.

RESTAURANTS: Award-winning Japanese (Sakura; lunch, dinner, weekend brunches) and Indian Restaurants (Chutney; Bar, & Tandoor; lunch, dinner). International Restaurant (Zing = 24/7 coffee shop with limited menu). The restaurants are expensive. There are good and cheaper restaurants and a small supermarket nearby.

AMENITIES: All the usual and choice of king or twin beds; newspaper; shower, but no tub; bathrobes and slippers [2]; movie and premium TV channels; small, flat-screen TV; bottled water; luggage storage [3], nice long desk (9-11 June), but only 1 work chair (Deluxe Room). Other room classes offer more amenities. Teeth in hangers to keep pants from sliding off, interesting.

INTERNET: They charge for wifi: 30 minutes (Rs 125 + tax), 3 hours (Rs 350 + tax), and 24 hours (Rs 750 + tax).

GIFT SHOP: Craft House and Art Spice (art gallery)

SPA: Award-winning NeoVeda

GARDENS: Garden of Joy

POOL: Often unavailable due to private parties or maintenance, but open while we were there. It was around 30 x 65 feet and 4 feet deep, clean, with clear water, and had towels [4].

OTHER FACILITIES: exercise room, spa pool, steam room

CHECK IN; CHECK OUT: Noon. We arrived at 4:30 am on 26 May, just as the sun was beginning to rise and received good service despite being around 12 hours late. We were allowed to check out late (4:30 pm) one day.

TAXES AND ADDITIONAL CHARGES: These are rather high [5].

PROBLEMS:
(I) Only 1 hand towel and 1 bath towel (26-27 May), only 1 bathrobe (26-27 & 30-31 May).
(II) No slippers on all 3 visits [2].
(III) The guidebook in the rooms is useless and frustrating.
(IV) The trash had not been taken out (26 May).

HEALTH: Pigeons and their poop are a health problem.

DANGERS:
(I) Tiles near the pool are covered in pigeon [A] poop.
(II) The stairs from the spa to the pool are also covered in pigeon poop. Not only can one slip down, but pigeons carry diseases than can infect humans.
(III) The tiles between the pool and the spa steps became very slippery when wet.
(JV) The tiles in the shower became very slippery when wet.

RECOMMENDATIONS:
(I) Improve the room guidebook.
(II) The pool design and filling level attracts pigeons to drink and bathe. This should be remedied.

AWARDS: Certificate of Excellence (2014, Tripadvisor); They have 23 recent awards including “Best Hotel in India” and “Best Rated Hotel in City.” [6]

ENVIRONMENTAL: Green Hotel of the Year Award (Knowledge Resource Development and Welfare Group). Their “EcoMet” philosophy uses ancient Indian Vedic science and modern science to reduce, reuse, and recycle.

REVIEWS: rated Very Good, 4 out of 5, 4424+ reviews. [7]

HISTORY: The hotel was built in 2000 and last renovated in 2011. It was a Japanese hotel “the Metropolitan Nikko” until 2006.

FOOTNOTES:
[1] A hotel without bathtubs should not be ranked 5 star.
[2] Only 1 robe and no slippers (26-27 & 30-31 May); 2 robes, but still no slippers (9-11 June)
[3] We left a bag in storage 11 May-9 June
[4] Despite the blast furnace of a wind, the water seemed cool when we swam at 6 pm 10 June.
[5] Taxes and Charges: A 12.5% State Luxury Tax is added onto your bill when you check out. This may be an unpleasant surprise, but is legal. However, some States charge this tax on the Rack Rate (advertised, full, non-discounted, greatly inflated rate no one ever pays). This Rack Rate is imaginary and much higher than the amount you paid for the room. This is a very expensive government scam. The more of a “discount” you received on the Rack Price of a room, the relatively higher the tax. You may really be paying a tax of 25%, 40%, or more on the price of your room. Leave it to a government to devise a means of charging a 90% tax while calling it only a 12.5% tax, very ingenious! Avoid hotels with high Rack Rates in States with Rack Rate scams.
A 7.4% Service Tax on what you actually paid for the room, not the on Rack Rate, and not the on the Luxury Taxes is also charged.
Some hotels even charge a Service Charge for the services rendered to you. This money goes to the hotel. The establishments are free to charge any amount as service charges since there are no guidelines provided by the tax authority. Most hotels do not have a service charge. Restaurants more traditionally impose this charge. You can complain about a service charge on a hotel bill.
These taxes and charges are subject to change and vary among States. You should check these rates before traveling.

The hotel is on a quiet street but close to the main shopping hub of New Delhi. The hotel service and breakfast buffet was very good. The room was spacious and clean with ample toilet amenities. It is at walking distance to the Gurdwara Bangla Saheb, presumably the largest Sikh holy temple in Delhi. One can enjoy reasonably priced vegetarian dishes at walking distance from the hotel.

Room Tip: Do not choose room facing the sides of the hotel as they have no view.
