“Colonial Great”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 20, 2014

Me and my partner traveled to this beauty of a hotel and had an absolutely amazing time. Our trip to Delhi was spectacular and the hotel made it even more so. The rooms are ageing but this adds to the nostalgic and old world charm of the property. The restaurants and food was great, a lot of choice. We especially enjoyed listening to the live music in the Indian Restaurant. All the staff were friendly and polite. The changing room for the pool needed more attention. Otherwise highly recommended.

we stayed here 2 nights with the family; start of a 3 weeks trip through India. great place, nice rooms; great shower and great food. Dine in The Spice Route!! The only stupid thing they do is they ask money for wifi and that is not 2014.

You'll stay at The Imperial because you're a traveller who wants to re-connect with the golden age of travel. Delhi will undoubtedly have flashier, more modern hotels with more flasher amenities so if they're important to you, stay in those. But for me, the sense of calm and occasion I get when I see the crisp white uniforms of the bellman, the scent of frangipani from the lobby and the long marbled corridors take me back to the romance of travel you can't get in a modern hotel. There's also a joy that comes from staying in a low rise hotel where the gardeners have to occasionally frighten off monkeys! Travelling on business, I stayed in one of the 'Eliza' rooms with special amenities for female travellers. The food in the pan-Asian restaurant (Spice Island?) is superb, breakfast is an absolute delight especially along the terrace and do make time for a gin late afternoon - 'and yes madam, of course you can have ice, you're at The Imperial.' The hotel style is art-deco influenced, similar in era to Raffles and Shanghai's Pearl Hotel. The gym is small but adequate while the pool and poolside service was wonderful. Particular recognition to the most excellent and informed concierge staff. Madam hopes that her travels take her back again to The Imperial!

Room Tip: While the room I stayed in was standard size, if you can upgrade to one of the next levels the addit...

The Imperial takes you back in history, depicting India, during the British Raj and takes you on a journey back with hundreds of artistically framed and positioned photos and paintings - not to mention the royal ambiance. Rooms are good, although a bit smaller. (The exterior makes a bigger impression than the rooms). Service is very good and prompt. Another attractive feature is that the hotel is in a very prime locality - Janpath - a couple of minutes' walk from Connaught Place (CP) - hence proximity to shopping, & eating and just wandering at CP

The first thing to note is the extortionate wifi charge. There's no excuse.

The hotel itself is very nice, as are the rooms. The housekeeping and bell staff are very helpful and friendly. That's where it ends.

A wedding party blocked the hotel entrance when we arrived, so we were ushered out of the way. No major problem, but there should be a plan for such cases.
We booked a spa package and whilst the massages were good, there were a lot of communication/organizational problems between the hotel and spa staff. We ended up not getting what we had booked, and they tried charging us when we'd already paid. There was no apology offered. A very expensive dinner at the hotel was hugely disappointing. We were locked out of our room even though we'd paid for late check out. Again, no apology. They also tried charging us for in room dining that we did not have. Again, no apology. Check out took an unnecessarily long time and the staff were unapologetic.

Airport transfer charges are extortionate. Just get a taxi from the courtyard outside for as regular rate.

Overall I do not recommend this hotel.

This Hotel really is amazing. It was everything that we had read, and heard about, and more. The setting is fantastic, the suite and view from it, brilliant. The service, everything you would expect, from one of the best Hotels in the world.
My only little gripe, was that we booked half board, expecting to be able to dine in one of the hotels world renown restaurants. But unfortunatly, where only allowed to have our meals in the Buffet breakfast bar. Nice as it was, with the price we paid(more for one night, than I have ever paid for a room for a week) we expected to dine in any of the Hotels restaurants.
But that aside, we had a fantastic stay. If you have the money, I would recommend this hotel without hesitation. If like me, you have to watch the pennies, I would recommend this hotel, as we did, for a once in a lifetime stay, for a special occasion.

Dear Guest,

Greetings from The Imperial!

Thank you for staying with us on your recent visit to New Delhi. I’m glad to note that you appreciated the property and its décor. However, we have noted your dissatisfaction with the prices and would like to assure you that our prices are at Par with all similar level hotels and we strongly believe in providing complete value for money to our guests. I have also noted your feedback regarding breakfast at The 1911 bar and I deeply regret the inconvenience caused due to this.

We, at The Imperial always strive to ensure our patrons experience the best visit possible during their travel and our staff was trying to ensure your comfort by offering you another room for quick service but unfortunately ended up upsetting you. We are deeply troubled that this issue has caused distress to you, our valued guest. I do hope you will accord us another opportunity to showcase our hospitality.

I hope to welcome you back soon.

Regards,
Vijay Wanchoo

If you ever wondered what it might have been like to visit India in the latter days of the British Raj, the Imperial will give you a glimpse of that bygone era. Built by the British in the early 30's the hotel has retained all of the charm and grandeur of that time but is updated with modern A/C, communications, entertainment and other facilities. The Hotel is decorated throughout with pictures and artifacts from that era giving the hotel an even more authentic feel. With a choice of eight distinctly different restaurant styles the visitor is totally spoilt for eating choice. The staff is friendly, accommodating to one's needs but not intrusive. We would have no hesitation to return if ever back in New Delhi.
