I have been to the West View many times and have written previous reviews on how good it is, but last night my wife and I dined there and were really disappointed on what has happened to this once great eating establishment.
I knew something was different when I called for reservations. Having done so many times in the past, I know the restaurant's policy, hours and rhythm. On this call, I was told that the restaurant was fully booked until 8:00pm and no reservations were taken after 8:00pm. Firstly, this is India and no restaurant fills up until 8:30 or 9:00 at the earliest and secondly, they have always taken reservation regardless of the time. I waited a day and called back and got a completely different answer and was able to make reservations for 7:00pm. Just as a note, even when we left at 8:30pm, only 4 tables had guest and the rest were empty.
For those not familiar with the West View's format. They have an extensive appetizer buffet which complements a buffet of various meats, seafood and vegetarian offerings. The first obvious change is that their choice of creative and distinguished appetizers have been reduced to basic salads and cheeses. Gone are the thoughtful shrimp dishes and interesting vegetable medleys.
As well, the quality of the meats has been compromised. A few months back, the buffet was stacked with thick cuts of fillets and tender lamb. Now, the steaks are tenderloins and have an odd color to them, while the lamb has a much more "mutton" taste.
The biggest change is that the woman chef, who was superb with cooking meat and understood western preparation, has been replaced by a mediocre cook who just did not seem to grasp the subtleties of European food preparation. He pounded my already mediocre steak into a flat, tough patty that resembled more of a hamburger, than a steak. Worse yet, both the steak puck he produced and the lamb were served drowned in an unidentifiable sauce that made the two entrees virtually unpalatable.
The one consistent bright spot to the West View is the service. It continues to be excellent. The wait staff is attentive and professional and are always ready to accommodate you in any way.
The West View was a staple part of the expat restaurant rotation in Delhi being one of the few places you could get a great steak complimented by great service. I will not be returning to the West View until they restore the quality of both the food and preparation. It is shame, because it used to be so good!
