“Good food though slightly hyped.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 5, 2013

I had heard ALOT about Gunpowder before visting, and heard many great things. First impression is great, its tucked away in a corner of hauz khaz village, finding it may be a bit of a challange for anyone new to the area. The setup is nice, theres a great view of the lake, but when it comes to the food i found it to be slightly overrated. We went with a couple of friends and ordered a few dishes.(mostly non-veg) The buff i found to be too spicy, even though its supposed to be that way, i think it was a bit too much, infact mostly all the food was loaded with spice, which wasnt very pleasant. So after all i had heard about the food i found the location to be more satisfying than the food itself. The pricing of the food was also a little higher than expected. Had no problems with the service though, everyone was quiet helpfull, and the food did not take that long either.
Overall an okay experience, have had better south indian food though!!

“Fire your taste buds...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 3, 2013

I think the excitement and fun of a meal starts as soon as decide to go there and get out of your car and start the adventure of finding the place. You have to traverse through a maze of alleys and once you do that, you need to climb up some steep stairs and finally at the 4th floor or so you're there. it's almost as if it's a plan by the owners to make you really hungry for the food, if so, good strategy I must say. The view from the place and food definitely make up for it. It's a very simple setup of chairs and tables, sometimes when they are having a bad maintenance day, you might even have to do without an AC during summers
The food is definitely good although for some reason the day I visited not only was there a problem with ACs they for some reason were not even serving appams and 1-2 other varieties. But whatever we ordered was definitely good and worth a visit/try. I'm not too sure if they have a liquor license or not but I think one can get some beers, which in case is illegal gives a bit more of an adventure to your trip to the place.
Definitely worth at least one visit, an

“Good value for the view/area. Food is good without being spectacular.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 25, 2013

As others have mentioned, Gunpowder can be a bit of a pain to find, but if you get a table right on the terrace then it's worth the effort. I visited on a Sunday and we made sure to get there around 12:15 to guarantee a table with a view. To be honest though, even by the time we left only another couple of tables had filled up, so it seems much depends on luck. The experience would definitely be different if you were stuck inside, as the decor and ambiance is a little on the plain side without the view.

The food itself is pretty good without being spectacular. Everything we ordered was hard to fault, but nothing was amazing. The highlights for me would have to be the thoran, the sweet karela dish (can't remember the name) and the gravy of the "toddy shop" fish curry (fish itself was average). I would have much preferred red rice to accompany the meal though, and it's a shame that so few Southern places in Delhi offer it as an option. I guess Northerners just aren't particularly fond of it. The gunpowder itself is good, very nutty, but nowhere near as tasty as that on offer in Andhra Bhavan. The chach (buttermilk) was perfectly tempered though, and thick enough to use as a raita if you so choose!

The quality of service was faultless, and our waiter was extremely friendly. For a restaurant in Hauz Khas that commands such a great view, the prices are pretty reasonable, though obviously still pricey when compared to Southern thali joints.

In reality I think this place is worth 3.5/5 but I've rounded it up to 4. Opinions are often very split over this place though. Some of my colleagues think it's hugely overrated. My Keralan girlfriend would probably have given it a 3/5 max, as she feels a lot of Southern restaurants here in Delhi make concessions to Northern tastes. Besides, it's hard to compete with home cooked.

“A place for hardcore foodies”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 17, 2013

As you walk up to Gunpowder you realize that it is one of those places which is totally dependent on its quality of food minus any fancy decor or frills of the nouveau Hauz Khas Village restaurants. I have been going to Gunpowder for a long time (whenever I get a chance and have people who enjoy just food) and have never been disappointed. Even though it is located between 2 so-called stalwart restaurants this place retains both its flavour and charm for foodies like me.
The decor is simple and the restaurant has both outdoor and indoor seating for you to choose depending upon the weather. The tables are simple covered with white table cloth and the chairs done in cane normally seen at cafes. A table overlooking the lake in the outdoor area is an ideal location for me to have the food Gunpowder has to offer.
The food here is the best part and for non-vegetarians like me, the coastal cuisine is like a dream come true. This place serves South Indian non-veg food as good as it comes. If you like beef you have to try their beef curry along with Appams, for me I just cannot have enough of it and the gravy is out of this world. The Hyderabadi Biryani is decent, though it is not the best I'd say. The Mutton Korma is spicy and believe me when I say it is one of the best you'd try in Delhi. I must recommend ordering buttermilk to wash down all the spicy food one would end up consuming. This place makes a glutton out of me which I am very proud of. Besides the Appam you can complement all these dishes with a Malabari Parotta. Sea-food lovers can try the Prawn fry and the Prawn curry tastes amazing with steam rice. The food is good quality and the way it is prepared gives you a feel of authentic home cooked South Indian fare.
The service is prompt but they do take some time when it is crowded.
This place is heaven for hardcore foodies and people who love South Indian cuisine.
