“Never again.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 24, 2013

Shudder.

I've made bad travel decisions in my life, and here in India, and this counts as one. The staff were some of the unfriendliest I've ever come across. Anywhere. Not even I was so cranky, and I had to pay to be there. My mom caught one of the male front desk agents yelling at one of the female employees, who abruptly desisted when he noticed her. At least he desisted.

They kindly offer free wifi that doesn't work, which has the added bonus of luring you onto their paid computers. You can try to reason with them that you only need 5 minutes to write an email, and that the wifi wasn't working, but they'll still hotly insist you pay.

I sincerely believe the staff do not want business.

And the breakfast! I won't go into detail for fear of my blood pressure.

It's got a good location, but what is location if you don't feel welcome?

I had been to YWCA international Hostel for a small meeting. It is cheap and has basic accommodation and fooding arrangements. Difficult to find such an affordable place in Delhi and especially in that particular location.

Quite basic, but cheap and very clean hostel in centre of Delhi. Couple of small draw-backs, but would definitely recommend for cheap, central accommodation.

Good points:
- Impeccably clean.
- Big rooms.
- Comfy bed.
- Cheap (was roughly £25p/n for double with breakfast).
- Just five minutes walk from Connaught Place.
- Just five minutes from Patel Chowk metro station.
- Friendly staff.
- Hot running water and 24hr electric.
- Very good food in restaurant downstairs.
- Free wi-fi available in restaurant/lobby from 12 noon-10pm (but doesn't work in rooms)
- Easy walk to shops and restaurants, felt safe at night even for woman on your own.

Bad points:
- Water: heater switch was in room, was a balancing act to stop water being either boiling or freezing. However, there was always water and electricity 24hrs.
- Wi-fi cuts out when restaurant closes (around 10pm) - not great for time-difference when contacting UK.
- Average security: although there are 24hr staff on both the gate and reception I went down late at night/early in the morning and there was no-one at either post. Someone also tried to get info my room at around 5am one morning.
- No safe in room (although there was a safe/drawer in reception).

Tips:
Be very clear about address in taxis as there are other YWCA centres and also the YMCA hotel. Be sure to mention 'Sansad Marg', not just Parliament Street.

Normally out of our budget, we stayed here returning from a trip where someone else was covering the fee. Our plane - due to arrive at 11pm - arrived closer to 3am. I managed to email the YWCA with a "will be late" message, but couldn't give an ETA... and when we arrived, the reception desk was staffed, waiting for our arrival. He'd been napping, clearly - and a well-deserved nap at that! We were registered, given our room, and caught two hours of sleep before having to catch our train that morning. The water was running (and hot when we needed it!), within walking distance of a number of sights if we'd been sticking around for that, and the service staff absolutely excellent.

Delhi guesthouses could learn from the this very well managed and run YWCA. The professionalism and friendliness of the staff, on the reception desk, in the restaurant and among the cleaners and porters, was admirable.

We stayed in a superior room - very spacious (presumably for a third bed), very clean and with nice furnishing touches - especially the characterful green chairs (from the 1950s?)

This YWCA doesn't seem as well known as others in Delhi, and lacks the pool and doubtless their other facilities. But its discreteness and quietude (although apparently full during our stay) is most welcome.

The restaurant is unexpected - not institutional, with appealing decor and interesting menu of lunch and supper. The only issue was television rather spoiling the YWCA vibe (well, it was cricket I guess), My mother had a dim view of the breakfast - no Indian breads or chai, at least not from the buffet provided in the cost of the room.

Supper though was fine and the waiter was very helpful and kind - even helping pick up our scrabble letters that we inadvertently cascaded to the floor.

For a central, quiet location in Delhi, this YWCA is recommended.

Affordable, very clean, and conveniently located near Connaught. A delicious restaurant in same building. banks, vendors, shopping all nearby. An Indian neighborhood with lots of flavour and so much fun to wandermaround and take in the sites. Also walking distance from Pahar Ganj. Wifi only in the restaurant and lobby.
