“Paradise in Panama”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 22, 2012

This was the first trip my husband and I have taken just the two of us since we had our son two and a half years ago and we could not have picked a better spot. It's like living in a postcard. I love that the beach and ocean are in your front yard and the rainforest is in your backyard. Such a unique environment. Lloyd and Sue (hosts) are the best! So good-natured and accommodating. We stayed in the Tortuga, which is right on the beach. Very spacious. Shower was better than the one we have at home! Food was outstanding. If you go, I hope you get to try Sue's stuffed pumpkin blossoms. One of the most memorable dishes I've ever eaten. We could be as active as we wanted (snorkeling, surfing, SUP) or just relax on the dock in a hammock with a book. We did a bit of both:) The excursions we chose were also special. Linda and Dave at the chocolate farm were an absolute delight and Nidori Beach was an amazing cultural experience. We definitely plan on going back. Perhaps next time with our son when he's old enough. We had an amazing time as a couple, but I can see having a wonderful family vacation here as well. One of the best trips I've ever taken.

Room Tip: Pelicano and Tortuga are on the beach.

My wife and two kids could not stop talking about Casa Cayuco after we returned to Brooklyn. Sandwiched between the dense rainforest and the gentle Carribean waters of Panama's archipelago, Casa Cayuco is a small, friendly, community consisting of three cabins plus a main lodge where dinner is served at a large banquet table to all the guests. After one meal complete strangers feel like family. The food is spectacular and always fresh. We marveled at the simple, 4' wide elevated wooden footpath that connected the cabins and lodge from the beach. After a possible morning of rain (it is a rainforest after all) you appreciate the saturation of the island and pools of rain water water that never quite reach the elevated path. The late morning sun summons you to the white beach literally feet away. After beach time sand on your feet rinses away in colorfully tiled bowls of water countersunk into the footpath at the bottom of the steps to the wraparound porch and private entrance of each detached cabin. The cabins are built of indigenous woods from the rain forest that are warm in color and soothing in affect. The walls of the cabin end below the extended roof allowing ocean breathes to swirl inside while large, overhung, white , bed nets keep the occasional bug away while you sleep (never a problem). The rooms are spacious, airy and clean.
The beach of white sand and a long dock that extends over the water is a place of tranquility and delight. A large, thatched roofed at the end of the dock is the perfect shelter to swing from a hammock, play a game of scrabble, read a book while you swing gently from hanging canvas chairs, or watch a sun set behind the low cumulus clouds that dot the horizon of the mainland.
The island is a wonderful place to explore but the peace and calm that Casa Cayuco provides might mean you stay put and relax !!!

Everything about this resort was perfect! Perfect island. Perfect beach. Perfect size - only a max of 15 people can stay there. Perfect room - we stayed in the Pelicano right next to the beach. It's totally open air - even your shower! Perfect food - Sue is an amazing chef and she cooks locally sourced food for you every night! Perfect activities - best snorkeling I've experienced, paddle boards, sail boat, remote island visit, sailing. You must tour the indigenous village and their nature trails! Finally Sue and Lloyd have the two cutest bull dogs: Angus will even go paddle boarding with you. After experiencing this you won't want to stay at a mega resort again. (Scuba divers - one piece of advice for you. Casa Cayuco's not really set up to take you; the snorkelling is amazing, so you might be good with just that, but if you are a die hard, just do it in Bocos Town in the morning before you get picked up to go to Casa Cayuco.)

Room Tip: If you are just a couple Pelicano is the way to go - it's right on the beach!

When we arrived at Casa Cayuca we had no idea just how wonderful and memorable our stay was going to be. Our hosts Sue and Lloyd were so warm, helpful, and fun. We stayed in the Pelicano cabin which was right on their beautiful beach. Every day we were served delicious meals and the cocktails were out of this world. One of my favorite things was laying on one of their hammocks on the dock or walking back on their awesome rainforest path. We saw red tree frogs, sloths and all sorts of exotic birds and it was really well maintained. Sebastian, one of the staff, even took time out to point out various animals on the path. Our day trip to Zapatillos Islands was simply wonderful. I am nervous around deep water since I am a very poor swimmer but Sue and Lloyd took all of my anxieties away with thier reassurance and Ihad the best time snorkling in the pristine warm waters. Sue even packed a great lunch which we could take to other parts of the island for some time on our own if we wanted to. On the last day we stayed we were the only ones at the resort. Sue offered for us to have dinner on our cabin porch if we wanted to, so we did and they brought us a delicious meal despite the fact that it started to rain! The only bad thing about Casa Cayuca was having to leave. But we definitely plan on returning to this wonderful eco-lodge someday soon. I have traveled extensively around the world and I can honestly say this was one of the best trips I have ever taken.

Room Tip: The pelicano cabin has the best ceiling and is right on the beach.

My husband and I chose a trip to Panama to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. Based on reviews on Trip Advisor, we chose to stay at Casa Cayuco. I can't say enough about this wonderful eco lodge. Casa Cayuco provides transportation from Bocas Town to the island on their boat. The grounds are beautiful, right on the beach but also nestled into jungle. We stayed an entire week and couldn't have been more pleased. Sue and Lloyd are terrific hosts. The stay comes with 3 meals a day plus an afternoon snack. Local Panamanian women assist with the breakfast and lunches, and Sue is the chef extraordinaire for dinner. All the meals were superb. Dinners were always an event, exquisitely prepared 3 courses with beautiful presentation, and always from the available fresh local ingredients. Being able to visit with Lloyd and Sue during dinner and other times of the day was an added pleasure.

We made good use of the kayaks and snorkeling gear available for guest use. You can kayak out to a couple of reefs and snorkel on your own (they will instruct you ahead of time and provide an anchor). Casa Cayuco also provides guided excursions for a number of types of adventures. We did a snorkeling trip to Zapatillos, and a trip which included Mangrove snorkeling, Dolphin Bay, and tour of a Chocolate Farm. Both trips were great; one snorkeling trip more focused on the fish, and the other on the most beautiful colorful coral I have ever seen. We also did an excursion to Red Frog resort to do their zip line course, which was exhilarating. The rest of the time we spent relaxing and reading, taking advantage of the hammocks on the dock. A walk and kayak trip to Salt Creek, a small local village, and a villager guided tour on a jungle path are self-guided excursions you can take from Casa Cayuco and were also enjoyable. We are not surfers, but while we were there the first part of the week was very calm, clear waters, perfect for snorkeling, and the second half was high surf, with good surfing close by. Lloyd is an avid surfer, and guided surfing excursions are also offered. Wildlife seen included the famous red frogs, poison dart frogs, caymans, sloths, marine wildlife of course, beautiful butterflies and birds. We didn't see monkeys, but other guests did when they took the jungle tour in Salt Creek.

The cabins are very clean and comfortable. We stayed in Tortuga, which is right on the beach.
Overall, a perfect vacation! And much of the reason comes down to our hosts. Sue and Lloyd (and their fun canine companions, Bella and Angus) work very hard to make the vacation what you want, and they are great people to get to know. If you want to take a trip to this area, you can't do better than Casa Cayuco. A wonderful vacation!

Room Tip: 4 individual cabins (a 5th to soon be built), and 1 suite in the lodge. Some cabins are on the beach...

From a 11-year-old girl:
If you're looking for a place with nice people(Sue and Lloyd), good food, the best stars you've ever seen, beautiful sunsets, adventure, and much, much more fun this is the place for you. My experience at Casa Cayuco was one of the best vacations I ever had. We were in a rainforest cabin about 2 meters away from caiman, monkeys, and birds. Our family stayed here for 4 nights, and we would recommend Red Frog Zipline if you are an adventurer. We would also recommend snorkeling, Salt Creek if it is a cool day, and just relaxing on the dock and watching the sunset. Overall, I recommend Casa Cayuco for anyone!

From the parents:
We are a family of four with 9 and 11 year old kids. What a trip! I will add a few things to my daughter's review. The rooms really are great and better than advertised on the website. Clean jungle cabins, ceiling fans keep you comfortable at night, high quality linens, etc. Think a top quality boutique hotel, but in the jungle with no windows! On several mornings we woke up to morning rain storms before breakfast. We slept deeply. While it gets pretty warm during the mid afternoon, we found the weather very comfortable. Sue and Lloyd are wonderful hosts: laid back, knowledgeable about the area, great attention to the little details, and wow can Sue cook! Meals were gourmet quality, but with local, fresh ingredients. Sue does a great job of adapting cuisine to local fare. Can't say enough good things about the food. The setting is hard to believe. Crystal blue water, fabulous sunsets, a true jungle setting, great outings during the day (go to Zapatillo #2!) as adventurous or mellow as you prefer. We even lucked out and enjoyed the salt water phosphorescence during an evening beach walk! Thanks again Sue and Lloyd - you guys are the best!

Room Tip: Cabin Coco is very peaceful and scenic. Even though it is the one not on the beach, don't worry...

I absolutely agree with Moraga Traveler's review although I don't think any review could do Lloyd and Sue the justice they deserve. Casa Cayuco is far and away the best place my husband and I have ever stayed.

We stayed in Tortuga which was ocean front. The cabin and and view were incredible. Even the jungle side cottage, Coco, is only steps away from the beach.

Lloyd and Sue effortless made all guest feel like family (the kind you like). One night, after dinner, one of their employees brought over their two new puppies. All of us staying there hung out on the steps of the main lodge with the puppies like we had been friends forever. A very cozy feeling.

The only thing I did not like about Casa Cayuco was leaving. I actually cried!

There hasn't been a day that has gone by since we left that I have not thought about our stay at Casa Cayuco.

Room Tip: Don't let the fact that Coco is the "jungle side" cottage deter you if your first choi...
