“Great Place to Stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 23, 2013

We highly recommend Punta Rica. The owner, Richard, has the necessary arrangements worked out for you in advance. He meets you at the airport in Bocas and has a cab lined up to transport you and your luggage the short distance to the boat dock, where he has a boat and driver ready to take you on a short ride to the island of Bastimentos. The boat delivers you to a restaurant, and heads to Punta Rica with your luggage. The next time you see it, it is in the house. Punta Rica is somewhat like a bed and breakfast, except they serve you dinner as well. Each day, Elana met with us to help us plan our day. After one meal there, we decided never to eat out, as the meals prepared by Richard and Elena were unbelievable. Richard arranges to have the same boat driver at your service each day, and after you make your plans, a call is made and the boat driver arrives. If you have a disability which prevents you from climbing stairs, this place is not for you as the house is up the hill from the ocean shore and the bedrooms are on the second story of each suite. However, Richard has helpers who attend to your every need, including daily maid service, carrying your luggage to and from the boat, etc.. As near as I could tell, the only thing one is required to lift while staying at Punta Rica is a knife and fork. It is a great place to stay.

4 couples have traveled every Feb for 15+ yrs to a warm island. We consider Bastimentos to be our best so far. The first impression is an ahhhh moment, lush thick rainforest, brilliant tropical flowers, a peacefulness that immediately surrounds you as you enter the villa. Deep overhangs shelter you from sun or gentle showers, hammocks beckon. Its an eco haven of solar power, with soft rainwater for bathing. Each suite is 2story with a living area and balcony on the ground floor. a simple but comfortable bedroom/bath above with soothing cooling breezes. The food defies description. Each breakfast and dinner was a culinary delight of local seafood, fresh fruits and vegetables, mouthwatering desserts. Richard and Elana surpassed every expectation (Collette was in Montreal. Elena, a gorgeous vivacious local of Spanish decent charmed us all. Don't miss her shop at the entrance to Barracuda on main street in Bocas, Cristales del Mar, unique sea glass jewelery). We used the same water taxi each day, Cholo's. We chose trips to far away beaches to avoid the crowds. Zapatillo island was $25 per person, $20 to Starfish beach where the water was full of plate sized star fish. Chair rental was $5 a day. Crab wasnt cracked and mallett we were offered wasn't too clean. Stick to fried or smoked fish, delicious. A hand carved canoe brought in 17 live lobster in one load! In Bocas we loved the 2nd story wine bar owned by a friend of Elena's. Shopping in town was minimal but loved the red frogs on a leaf offered at every local booth plus Elenas jewelery. Would we go back? An absolute yes!! That's the highest compliment I know how to give.

Room Tip: Each is the same layout, only bedding color changes. Room furthest from the ocean gets hot water fir...

Punta Rica is one of the best places we stayed in Panama! The views from the windows were stunning, especially with the beautifully decorated interior. The hosts, Richard and Collette, were very hospitable. Collette and her staff went out of their way to accommodate us and to prepare culinary meals. We felt like guests in a beautiful jungle palace. The cost per night was very reasonable, as it included both a gourmet dinner and breakfast (which we will never forget). If you enjoy nature, beautiful views, comfortable accommodations, and outstanding service, I would strongly recommend staying at Punta Rica!

We were a large group of 12 people in three families. We rented the whole villa, one room for each adult couple (room being a private two story loft like space). and another fourth, for all of the kids together. We had a marvellous time.. We came from Chile and spent two weeks. Had an action packed, excursion-filled time. The only drawback being the boat taxi dependency, inevitable for any displacement in the area. Summed up quite a bill with daily excursions. About 100 dolars a day for moving the whole bunch from one beach to another. Food was great and we were ver well attended by both owners, Rochard and Collette. They would pack us a lunch when we needed and the environment surrounding was beautiful. We would see sloths in the trees from our breakfast table, simply amazing. 100% recommended!!

Room Tip: missed having a pool to save a little money on boat taxis. no good beaches within walking distance

Our stay at Punta Rica was everything we wished for and more. My girlfriend and I stayed about 6 nights at the Villa, situated across the bay from Bastamiento's town and less than a 10 minute boat ride from Bocas town, so all of our day time excursions were very accessible. The property is situated on a hillside with lush tropical surroundings and the villas themselves are quite comfortable and roomie with nice wood workmanship throughout. The bottom level of the villa is fairly basic with table and chairs and doors that open out to small balcony facing some lovely tropical trees and such. The top level is spacious with a large comfortable bed and a fairly modern bath. The overhead fan provides for a nice breeze at night providing for a good night sleep among the sound of crickets.
Some of the best Punta Rica has to offer resides in the kitchen. Each morning Colette provides for a lovely Caribbean breakfast of local fruit, fruit juice, coffee, cheese, or you can choose to have your cereal or eggs if you like. Dinner was often a treat of family recipes from their native Montreal, so we were often spoiled with a starter, a main and a dessert typically of local produce and meats but prepared in a classic way... The host were always attentive to dietary restrictions and the most minute details. In a nut shell, the food is great.
But what really makes Punta Rica special is the warm atomosphere created by both Colette and Richard at their villa. They accomodated our schedules and let us move at our own pace with ease. They are not only great host, but great people and it made our stay all the more special...

We spent three days at Punta Rica in our visit to the Bocas del Toro area of Panama. From the first moment our visit was relaxing and superb, with the business of our daily lives dissapearing instantly. The place is very beautiful with a tropical garden and big windows that overlook the forest and the sea. It is tastefully decorated and warm. The bedrooms are spacious and confortable, and very clean. The food is excellent, with a full breakfast with tropical fruits in the morning and wonderful sea food dishes that Collette prepares carefully. Our hosts, Richard and Colette, were great and went out of their way to make our stay confortable and enjoyable making us feel like guests of longtime friends. We would love to come back and definetly recomend!

Our family of four - two adults and two teenagers - just returned from our four night stay at Punta Rica, and we can't stop talking about our superb visit!

Colette and Richard are wonderful hosts - they have thought of every little detail to make your stay more enjoyable and comfortable. The villa is set in a picturesque jungle location, yet is a quick boat ride to towns, beaches of all kinds, and recreational activities. Colette helped us plan activities during the days, and Cholo, the trusty boat driver, accompanied us on some fun outings snorkeling at Starfish Beach, looking for dolphins at Dolphin Bay, snorkeling at Coral Cay, and bringing us over to Red Frog beach for surf and zip lining (unfortunately, it was closed for repair). While we enjoyed all these activities, we were always eager to return to the villa for the fantastic company of our hosts, and the marvelous dinner we knew we would be eating. The food is exquisite - the freshest ingredients, well executed and lovingly prepared by Colette.

Colette and Richard pour their hearts and souls into Punta Rica and, no doubt, you will feel it as you eat, sleep, relax in a hammock, play a board game, or while taking in a beautiful sunset view.

Our stay with Colette and Richard was truly a memorable and unique experience for us - we wish we could have stayed longer. Colette and Richard - The Fischer Family sends you our love and we all agreed, we would love to return to your magical place - Punta Rica is a "gem"!
