“Disappointing. Lacks what is advertised in promo materials at resort”
Red Frog Beach Resort offers two restaurants. One in the Bocas Bound Hostel and the second at Punta Lava Beach Bar and Grill. At Punta Lava Beach Bar, the owners seem more interested in hanging out and waxing a surfboard than taking care of guests. The atmosphere here is much better than the hostel restaurant, since it’s on the water and has fittingly local music blaring over their PA system.
However, the local staff run the business and as a result, both food and service is inconsistent. For example, sometimes our pancakes and egg sandwich came with a piece of fruit, half the week, it did not.
Also, Punta Lava advertises offering a “Panamanian Breakfast,” and every morning we asked for it to no avail. Another disappointment was the operating hours of Punta Lava Beach Bar and Grill. In our welcome package (see uploaded photo), hours are advertised as offering breakfast at 8:00 a.m. and closing at 9:00 p.m. But upon arriving one morning at 8:15 a.m., we were advised breakfast isn’t actually started until 8:30 a.m. This was discouraging as we had to make the 25 minute boat ride from Red Frog Island to Bocas Town to partake in a 9:00 a.m. tour.
Punta Lava is promoted on Red Frog Beach Resort’s website as offering a Happy Hour. Unfortunately, each day we asked about this, Happy Hour did not exist. Instead, this establishment closed between 5:00 and 5:30 p.m. local time, not 9:00 p.m. as advertised in the poorly photocopied welcome package.
We did find another restaurant and bar just down the beach, which had a more welcoming staff, honoured their signage of hosting a happy hour, and offered fantastic, family-styled food.
