“Great location and great host”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 19, 2015

We enjoyed our short stay at TioToms. Rooms are very nice and clean, food was also very good and the staff was super nice. Owner Chris even offered us his private room as the location was overbooked.
We can absolutely recommend this place. Thanks again to Chris :)

We stayed for 3 nights in early January... I've stayed in a lot of budget places & this is one of the good ones. Long as all you want to do is read & swing. You can also get boat trips for snorkelling & to other beaches but we were feeling lazy & never left.
The family dinner at night is delicious (always Carribean chicken or beef with rice on our visit) & at $8, great value feed.
Pizzas are homemade including the base & a little hit and miss, but nice enough.
There's a row of 8 hammocks on the jetty just for guests which are still perfect when the rain starts pouring as they are undercover (mind out for wet season Dec-April!)
It's German run, so a German crowd mainly, we were very happy there and definitely recommend.

All in all TioTom is a nice and small guest house with a quiet good location on Bastimentos.
The rooms have their own bath room and are big enough for 2 people ore more.
The hamocks are great to relax.
Chris the owner can organize activities or a water taxi for you.
The food is ok
The only problem is that due to the fact that it is really small you can hear nearly every noise at night and some of the guests made party all night what lends to a sleepless night.
If you also like to party it is fun but if you want to have it calm and relaxed you should book another hostel.

Tio tom's house is directly accessible by water taxi, which is VERY important since you arrive to Isla Bestimentos around 6:00 am if you're taking the bus from Panama City. We didn't get any lip for lounging and catching some snooze on the hammock waiting for the reception to open. Stay at the guesthouse is definitely an experience, and worth it at least once in your life. We spent most of our time of Bocas so we didn't have much interaction with the host, but our room was ready all our questions were asked, and we got recommendations for snorkeling areas. All in all, let's say it's definitely worth the experience to stay at least one night if you're visiting Isla Bastimentos. Don't expect any first world anything.. our bed had an annoying circular mosquito net so it wouldn't cover the entire perimeter of the bed. The fan is a small desk fan that barely shoes away the flies. But like I said, coming from the inner city, this is definitely an experience. Expect lots of noises coming from the ocean.

Room Tip: Choose a room that faces away from the water taxi dock so people aren't constantly looking into...

The place is perfectly located and has an original all-wood design. The German staff is helpful and polite, nevertheless we got told it wasn't a problem and safe to walk to the beach. When we met the police half-way and heard there was armed robberies we felt somewhat naive...

Due to its design you can hear everything from the restaurant and deck plus the boats leaving and arriving right next to you. Since we spent an extra buck (~50$/night) to have some peace and quiet in the bungalow we weren't really appreciated about it; plus the kitchen was next door.

The deck is right at the water and has some hammocks to relax in, makes the place very comfy.

This little. B&B on stilts over the water in the center of the great little village of Old bank on the island Bastimentos is perfect for the independent traveler with a bent to the simpler side of life yet without the unwanted surprises. The owner and his staff are very knowledgable about the area and do their best to make the guests feel at home. The highlight at the end of the day is the excellent and reasonably priced family style dinner. As for me, I can't wait to return to Tio Toms guesthouse next year.

Tio Toms guesthouse is located on isla bastimentos. It was really easy to get there by watertaxi and the island is much calmer than isla colon. There are no cars or other motorised vehicles on the island, beside the water taxis. The guesthouse rooms are simple but clean and every room has its own bathroom. It can get loud because of the water taxis, which arrive and depart next to the guesthouse. The owners Chris and Tom are nice and the dinner they offered us was delicious . Chris has got very good connections to boat tour guides. Our guide (Roberto) was very nice, patient and explained a lot during our trip to some of the smaller islands close to isla bastimentos. We really enjoyed hanging out in the hammocks at the end of the day.
